一旦 + Clause + 就 + Clause
Reach for this when you want to describe a trigger that causes an unavoidable, often serious consequence — 'once X happens, Y follows.' Stronger than 如果 ('if'): 一旦 implies inevitability and usually points to events you'd rather avoid. Common in legal contracts, safety warnings, business risk discussions, parenting advice, and news commentary. Register is moderately formal — slightly heavier than everyday speech but routine in writing.

How to Think About It
Think of 一旦 as a tripwire. 如果 just asks 'if this happens.' 一旦 says 'the moment this happens, there's no going back.' The 就 in the second clause locks in the consequence. Use it when the trigger is something you'd want to prevent or be ready for — leaking data, breaking a rule, missing a deadline — not for casual 'if you have time, call me' situations.

Learners use 一旦 for casual 'if' conditions, making everyday statements sound like a contract warning. Save it for triggers with weight or irreversibility.

如果...就...
Neutral 'if...then.' No weight, no urgency. Use for everyday hypotheticals. 一旦 adds inevitability and usually negative stakes.
只要...就...
'As long as...' — frames the trigger as a sufficient condition, often positive ('as long as you try, you'll succeed'). 一旦 frames it as a dangerous threshold.
一...就...
'As soon as...' — immediate sequence ('as soon as I got home, I slept'). About timing, not about a triggered consequence.
