一旦 X 就 Y
Reach for 一旦...就... when you want to say 'once X happens, Y is inevitable' — the consequence isn't just possible, it's locked in. Stronger and more formal than 如果. Use it for warnings ('once you sign, you can't take it back'), trust-building claims ('once she promises, she delivers'), and policy talk ('once the law takes effect, fines apply'). Common in news, contracts, speeches, and serious advice. Carries a tone of finality.
Structure
一旦 + Clause X, (Subject) + 就 + Clause Y
yí dàn... jiù...
How to Think About It
一旦 means 'once' in the trigger-and-consequence sense, not the 'once upon a time' sense. Think of it as flipping a switch: the moment X happens, Y follows automatically. 如果 only proposes a hypothetical ('if it rains'); 一旦 implies the speaker takes X as a real possibility with an unavoidable result ('once it rains, the road floods'). The 就 marks the chained consequence.
Examples
一旦你签了合同,就不能反悔了。
Yí dàn nǐ qiān le hé tong, jiù bù néng fǎn huǐ le.
Once you sign the contract, you can't go back on it.
一旦感冒,他就要休息好几天。
Yí dàn gǎn mào, tā jiù yào xiū xi hǎo jǐ tiān.
Once he catches a cold, he has to rest for several days.
一旦失去信任,就很难再建立起来。
Yí dàn shī qù xìn rèn, jiù hěn nán zài jiàn lì qǐ lái.
Once you lose trust, it's very hard to rebuild it.
一旦新政策开始执行,所有公司都要调整。
Yí dàn xīn zhèng cè kāi shǐ zhí xíng, suǒ yǒu gōng sī dōu yào tiáo zhěng.
Once the new policy is implemented, every company will have to adjust.
Common Mistake
Learners use 一旦 for any 'if' situation and drop the 就. 一旦 carries inevitability — save it for consequences that genuinely follow. And the 就 in the second clause signals the automatic chaining; dropping it makes the sentence feel incomplete.
一旦你有时间,给我打电话。
如果你有时间,就给我打电话。
Don't Confuse With
如果... 就...
Plain hypothetical 'if.' Use 如果 for ordinary conditions without strong consequences. 一旦 reserves itself for situations where the result is serious or unavoidable.
只要... 就...
'As long as X, then Y' — emphasizes the sufficient condition. 只要 is positive ('all you need is X'); 一旦 is more about a trigger that locks consequences in, often with a warning tone.
一... 就...
'As soon as A, then B' — describes immediate sequence in habitual or past situations ('as soon as I get home, I shower'). 一旦 is hypothetical and weightier; 一 just chains two events in time.
