不在于...而在于...
Reach for this when you want to redirect what matters. The speaker says 'the point is NOT X — the point is Y,' replacing a tempting but wrong focus with the real one. Common in essays, op-eds, and analytical writing where the writer is correcting a popular framing. The 在于 means 'lies in,' so the whole thing reads as 'lies not in X, but in Y.'

How to Think About It
在于 is a fixed phrase: it points to where the essence or key of something LIVES. So 'key 不在于 X' literally means 'the key does not live in X.' Pair it with 而在于 Y and you give the listener the new address. The 而 is the pivot that signals the correction is coming — drop it and the second half loses its argumentative weight. The whole pattern carries written register; in speech you would just say 重点不是 X，是 Y.

Common Mistake
Learners use 不是...而是... (which corrects identity: 'not A but B') when they mean 不在于...而在于... (which corrects WHERE THE IMPORTANCE LIES). The latter is specifically about focus or essence, not about the thing's identity. Saying 关键不是钱，而是态度 is fine but feels less precise than 关键不在于钱，而在于态度.
