不是A,而是B
Reach for 不是A,而是B when you want to push back on what someone probably thinks and replace it with the real answer — 'not A, but rather B.' It's the workhorse pattern for correcting assumptions, redirecting arguments, and making sharp contrasts in essays, speeches, and debates. A and B should be the same KIND of thing (same axis) so the swap feels clean.
Structure
[SUBJECT] 不是 [A], 而是 [B]
bù shì... ér shì...
How to Think About It
不是A,而是B isn't just listing two facts — it's actively REPLACING A with B in the listener's mind. That's why A and B must be on the same axis: same category, same role, same question being answered. '不是钱的问题, 而是态度的问题' (same axis: what kind of problem). '不是钱的问题, 而是他没来' (different axis — sounds broken). 而是 is more emphatic and written than just 是: dropping 而 makes the contrast sound softer.
Examples
他不是不想去, 而是没时间。
Tā bù shì bù xiǎng qù, ér shì méi shíjiān.
It's not that he doesn't want to go — he just doesn't have time.
这不是运气, 而是努力的结果。
Zhè bù shì yùnqi, ér shì nǔlì de jiéguǒ.
This isn't luck — it's the result of hard work.
我要的不是道歉, 而是改变。
Wǒ yào de bù shì dàoqiàn, ér shì gǎibiàn.
What I want isn't an apology, but real change.
Common Mistake
Learners use this whenever there are two facts in a sentence, even when the second isn't really correcting the first. The pattern needs a real contrast — B refutes A on the same dimension. Also, learners forget 而 and just say '不是A,是B', which is grammatical but weaker and more colloquial.
他不是医生, 而是他姐姐喜欢看书。
他不是医生, 而是护士。
Don't Confuse With
不仅 A, 而且 B
Additive ('not only A but also B') — both true, B escalates. 不是A,而是B replaces A — A is false, B is true.
与其 A, 不如 B
Comparison of preferences ('rather than A, better to B') — both are options under consideration. 不是A,而是B is a hard correction, not a preference.
不是 A 就是 B
Two-option guess ('either A or B'). Both still possible. 不是A,而是B kills A entirely and declares B.
