不用...
Reach for this when you want to tell someone there's no need to do something — 'no need to,' 'don't have to.' The everyday way to wave off unnecessary effort, politeness, or worry. Use it to decline help ('no need to come pick me up'), reassure someone ('don't worry about it'), or explain that an action is optional ('you don't have to bring a gift'). Neutral, friendly register — common in spoken Chinese, texts, and casual writing.
Structure
(Subject) + 不用 + Verb (+ Object).
bú yòng
How to Think About It
不用 literally means 'no need to use [doing it].' It tells the listener the action would be wasted effort. Compare with 不要 ('don't' — a command) and 不能 ('can't' — forbidden or impossible). 不用 is the friendliest of the three: it doesn't forbid, it just relieves you of the obligation. Note the tone change — 不 becomes bú before the fourth-tone 用.
Examples
你不用担心,我会处理。
Nǐ bú yòng dānxīn, wǒ huì chǔlǐ.
You don't need to worry — I'll handle it.
明天不用早起,是周末。
Míngtiān bú yòng zǎo qǐ, shì zhōumò.
No need to get up early tomorrow — it's the weekend.
不用谢。
Bú yòng xiè.
You're welcome. (Literally: no need to thank.)
你不用来接我,我自己打车。
Nǐ bú yòng lái jiē wǒ, wǒ zìjǐ dǎchē.
You don't need to pick me up — I'll take a taxi.
Common Mistake
Learners reach for 不要 ('don't') when they mean 'no need.' 不要 sounds like a command or refusal; 不用 sounds like reassurance. Telling a guest 不要带礼物 sounds harsh; 不用带礼物 sounds warm.
你不要谢我。
你不用谢我。
Don't Confuse With
不要 + Verb
'Don't' — a direct command or strong refusal. Use 不要 when you want to forbid; 不用 when you want to free someone from obligation.
不必...
Slightly more formal/written version of 不用. Same meaning ('no need'), but 不必 fits writing and 不用 fits speech.
不能...
'Cannot' — about ability or permission. 不能去 means 'can't go'; 不用去 means 'don't need to go.'
