以为...
Reach for this when you want to contrast a mistaken belief with the real situation. 'They thought X, but actually Y.' Common in essays, social commentary, and storytelling — anywhere you're correcting an assumption or revealing an irony. The first half names the wrong belief; the second half drops the truth. The pattern is a setup-punchline structure that always implies the subject was deceived or self-deluded.
Structure
yǐwéi... shíjì shàng...
How to Think About It
以为 is critical — it specifically means 'thought (but was wrong).' Unlike 认为 (neutral 'think / believe'), 以为 presupposes the belief turned out false. Pair it with 实际上 ('actually / in reality') and you have a built-in irony machine: the listener knows from the word 以为 that a correction is coming. Native ears wait for the 实际上 to land the contrast.
Examples
Wǒ yǐwéi tā zài kāi wánxiào, shíjì shàng tā shì rènzhēn de.
I thought he was joking — actually he was serious.
Dàjiā yǐwéi zhè jiā diàn piányi, shíjì shàng hěn guì.
Everyone thought this place was cheap — actually it's expensive.
Wǒ yǐwéi jīntiān shì xīngqī wǔ, shíjì shàng shì xīngqī sì.
I thought today was Friday — actually it's Thursday.
Common Mistake
Learners use 认为 instead of 以为, but 认为 is neutral and doesn't carry the 'was wrong' nuance. With 认为, the contrast with 实际上 still works but loses the built-in 'turned out to be mistaken' meaning. Use 以为 specifically when you want to flag the belief as incorrect.
Don't Confuse With
认为...
Neutral 'think / consider.' Use 认为 for any opinion, true or false. 以为 specifically marks the opinion as later proven wrong.
其实...
'Looks like X, but actually Y.' Focused on appearance vs reality from an outside view. Use 看起来 for visual or surface impressions; use 以为 when the subject genuinely held a wrong belief.
不是...而是...
Direct correction — 'not X but Y.' Doesn't include the misunderstanding. Use 以为...实际上 when you want to highlight that someone was fooled.
