如果 / 想 ... 要 ...
Reach for this when you're laying down a requirement for getting what someone wants — 'if you want X, you have to do Y.' Either start with 如果 ('if') and a goal, or skip 如果 and lead with 想 + verb ('want to do X'); either way, the second half uses 要 to spell out the obligation. Common in advice ('if you want to learn Chinese, you have to practice every day'), warnings ('if you want to sell, you have to ask me first'), and rules of engagement.
Structure
如果 [GOAL] / 想 [DESIRED ACTION], 要 [REQUIRED ACTION]
rúguǒ / xiǎng ... yào ...
How to Think About It
想 carries the want, 要 carries the must — they look almost identical but do opposite jobs in this pattern. 想 = 'would like to'; 要 = 'have to / need to.' The structure exists to draw a line between desire and obligation: you can want anything, but if you want it, here's the price. 如果 at the front is optional in spoken Chinese (especially after 想), but adding it makes the conditional explicit.
Examples
想学好中文, 要每天练习。
Xiǎng xué hǎo Zhōngwén, yào měitiān liànxí.
If you want to learn Chinese well, you have to practice every day.
如果想卖车, 要先问我。
Rúguǒ xiǎng mài chē, yào xiān wèn wǒ.
If you want to sell the car, you have to ask me first.
想去那家店, 要提前订位。
Xiǎng qù nà jiā diàn, yào tíqián dìngwèi.
If you want to go to that restaurant, you have to book ahead.
Common Mistake
Learners flip 想 and 要, using 要 in both slots ('要去要学'). 想 expresses desire, 要 expresses requirement — they aren't interchangeable here. If you want to say 'if you want to go, you have to study,' it's 想去, 要学, not 要去, 要学.
要去中国, 要学中文。
想去中国, 要学中文。
Don't Confuse With
如果 ... 就 ...
Neutral conditional — 'if X, then Y.' No obligation flavor. Use 如果...就... when the result is automatic; switch to 要 in the second slot when you're laying down a requirement.
只要 ... 就 ...
Means 'as long as X, then Y' — sufficient condition. 'As long as you study, you'll pass.' 想...要... is about what you MUST do; 只要...就... is about what's ENOUGH to do.
要是 ... 就 ...
Conversational version of 如果...就.... Use 要是 in casual speech; 如果 in more careful or written contexts. Both work the same way.
