越 X 越 Y
Reach for this when you want to link two progressive changes — 'the more X, the more Y.' Both halves describe the SAME subject changing along two related dimensions: read more, understand more; eat more, want more; talk longer, get angrier. The fixed special case 越来越 ('more and more') drops the X and just says the trait keeps intensifying over time. It's one of the most useful patterns in spoken Chinese for tracking change.
Structure
[SUBJECT] 越 [VERB/ADJECTIVE X] 越 [VERB/ADJECTIVE Y]
yuè... yuè...
How to Think About It
Both 越's anchor the SAME subject's change across two correlated traits. The trick is that 越 takes verbs or adjectives directly — no 是, no 得. Mixing in a second subject between the two 越's breaks the pattern, because the proportional link is supposed to be internal to one person or thing. The fixed form 越来越 + adj/verb ('more and more X') is a daily-use shortcut where the first 越 is paired with 来 to mean 'over time.'
Examples
他越跑越快。
Tā yuè pǎo yuè kuài.
The more he runs, the faster he gets.
我越想越生气。
Wǒ yuè xiǎng yuè shēngqì.
The more I think about it, the angrier I get.
雨越下越大。
Yǔ yuè xià yuè dà.
The rain is falling harder and harder.
Common Mistake
Learners swap in a second subject between the two halves, treating 越 like English 'the more.' But the proportional relation must stay within one subject. Also, learners insert 得 or 是 after 越, which doesn't belong here.
我越说,他越生气。(only works if you specifically mean two subjects, but learners often mean ONE)
他越说越生气。
Don't Confuse With
越是A,越B
越是A,越B emphasizes a category or paradox ('the kind that IS A is the kind that B'). 越 X 越 Y describes proportional change in one subject. Add 是 only when you mean to spotlight a category.
越来越...
Fixed shortcut: 越来越 + adjective/verb = 'more and more over time.' One-subject change without naming the X. 天气越来越冷 = 'the weather is getting colder and colder.'
...得越多,...得越多
Uses verb + 得 complement, useful when the verb takes a measurable result ('the more you eat, the more you want'). 越...越... works directly without the 得 complement.
