...的东西
Reach for [modifier] + 的东西 when you want to refer to a thing by describing it rather than naming it — 'the X thing / things that are X.' The modifier can be an adjective (小的东西 — small things), a verb phrase (你买的东西 — things you bought), or a noun (我的东西 — my things). It's how Chinese builds 'the kind of thing that...' without a relative pronoun. Use it constantly in daily speech.
Structure
[MODIFIER] 的东西
... de dōngxi
How to Think About It
的 is the universal glue that lets anything modify a noun. With 东西 ('thing'), it becomes a catch-all for objects whose name you don't need to specify. So 你买的东西 packs the entire clause 'you bought it' into a single noun phrase meaning 'the stuff you bought.' If you can describe it but don't want to name it, slot the description in front of 的东西 and you have a usable noun.
Examples
我喜欢便宜的东西。
Wǒ xǐhuan piányi de dōngxi.
I like cheap things.
你买的东西在桌子上。
Nǐ mǎi de dōngxi zài zhuōzi shang.
The things you bought are on the table.
好吃的东西不一定贵。
Hǎochī de dōngxi bù yídìng guì.
Tasty things aren't necessarily expensive.
Common Mistake
Learners drop 的 between the modifier and 东西, which breaks the relative-clause link. Without 的, the two pieces just sit next to each other and the sentence falls apart.
我喜欢好看东西。
我喜欢好看的东西。
Don't Confuse With
...的人
Same structure with 人 ('person') instead of 东西. Use 的人 for people, 的东西 for objects.
...的地方
Same structure with 地方 ('place'). Use it when the thing being described is a location.
[POSSESSOR] 的 [NOUN]
Same 的, used for possession ('my book = 我的书'). Same grammar — 的 is always the modifier-noun glue.
