Subject + 自己 + V
Reach for this when you want to stress that the subject is doing something on their own — without help, without being asked, or without anyone else involved. 自己 ('self / oneself') sits between the subject and the verb to add that emphasis. Everyday register, works in casual speech and writing alike. Common contexts: independence ('I'll cook by myself'), self-reliance ('he figured it out himself'), and parenting ('let the kid try on his own').

How to Think About It
自己 is the 'on one's own' marker. It doesn't replace the subject — it reinforces it. English uses voice and stress ('I'LL do it') to convey 'by myself'; Chinese needs the word 自己 sitting before the verb. Drop 自己 and the sentence just states the action; add it and the action becomes deliberately solo. You can also stack it as a reflexive — 他打了自己 ('he hit himself') — but the bread-and-butter use is before the verb for emphasis.
Examples
我自己来。
Wǒ zìjǐ lái.
I'll do it myself.
孩子应该自己穿衣服。
Háizi yīnggāi zìjǐ chuān yīfu.
Kids should put on their own clothes.
他自己做了一个蛋糕。
Tā zìjǐ zuòle yīgè dàngāo.
He made a cake himself.
你自己决定吧。
Nǐ zìjǐ juédìng ba.
You decide for yourself.
Common Mistake
Learners place 自己 after the verb because English puts 'myself' at the end ('I'll do it myself'). In Chinese, 自己 goes between the subject and the verb when it's emphasizing self-reliance. Putting it after the verb usually makes it a reflexive object, which changes the meaning.
我做自己。
我自己做。
Don't Confuse With
一个人 + V
'Alone' — emphasizes that no one else is around. 自己 emphasizes that the subject is doing the action without help. 我一个人吃饭 = I'm eating alone. 我自己吃饭 = I'll eat on my own / I can feed myself.
亲自 + V
'In person / personally' — used when a high-status person does something themselves instead of delegating. 自己 is everyday; 亲自 carries weight ('the CEO personally called').
V + 自己
When 自己 comes after the verb, it's the reflexive object ('hit oneself,' 'know oneself'). Position changes the role. Before the verb = emphasis; after the verb = object.
