X 不只是 ...
Reach for this when you want to insist something is bigger than the obvious label — 'X isn't just ...' 不只是 sets up the reader to expect more after the surface description. In essays and podcasts you'll often see it followed by an 也是 / 还是 clause ('not only X, also Y'), but even when used alone, the phrase plants a flag: there's more to this thing than meets the eye. Use it to elevate a topic beyond its first interpretation.

How to Think About It
只是 means 'merely / just' — a flattening word. 不只是 negates the flattening: 'not merely.' That negation is rhetorical: the speaker is pushing back against a reductive read of X. Even when 也是 doesn't follow explicitly, the listener mentally fills in 'and also something more.' Reach for 不只是 when you want to argue that something is deeper, more important, or more complex than its label suggests.

Common Mistake
Learners confuse 不只是 (not merely) with 不是 (is not). 不是手工 means 'is not a craft' — a flat denial. 不只是手工 means 'isn't just a craft' — implying it's a craft AND more. The 只 makes a huge difference in meaning.
拼豆不是手工。
拼豆不只是手工。
Don't Confuse With
不只是 ... 也是 ...
Full pair that spells out both halves — 'not only X, also Y.' Use it when you want to deliver the 'and also' explicitly; use bare 不只是 when context handles it.
不仅是 ...
Slightly more formal/written equivalent — 'not only.' Same meaning as 不只是, more common in essays and news; 不只是 is more conversational.
不是 ... 而是 ...
Replaces the label rather than adding to it — 'not X, but rather Y.' 不只是 keeps X true and stacks more on top; 不是...而是... rejects X entirely.
