X 也 Y / 也 + Verb
Reach for this when you want to say someone or something does the SAME thing as another — 'also,' 'too.' 也 sits right before the verb and signals a parallel: 'she likes sports too,' 'I can also take photos.' It's one of the first patterns learners meet because it's everywhere in everyday speech. The trick is its position: always before the verb, never at the end of the sentence like English 'too.'
Structure
[SUBJECT] 也 [VERB] ([OBJECT])
... yě ...
How to Think About It
也 is a pre-verb adverb, not a sentence-final tag. Where English 'too' floats to the end ('I like it too'), Chinese plants 也 right in front of the verb and never lets it leave. Think of it as a sticker attached to the verb that says 'and so does this subject.' The parallel it draws is always to something just mentioned — without prior context, 也 has nothing to mirror.
Examples
她也喜欢运动。
Tā yě xǐhuān yùndòng.
She likes sports too.
我也是学生。
Wǒ yě shì xuésheng.
I'm a student too.
这个手机也可以拍照片。
Zhège shǒujī yě kěyǐ pāi zhàopiàn.
This phone can also take photos.
Common Mistake
Learners put 也 at the end of the sentence on the English 'too' model, or place it before the subject. 也 must come AFTER the subject and BEFORE the verb. Putting it elsewhere makes the sentence sound broken.
我喜欢中文也。
我也喜欢中文。
Don't Confuse With
都
都 = 'all / both,' sums up a group. 也 = 'also,' adds a parallel. 我们都去 = 'all of us go'; 我也去 = 'I'm going too (like the others).' Don't swap them.
还
还 = 'still / additionally,' adds more info about the SAME subject. 也 draws a parallel between DIFFERENT subjects. 他喜欢茶,还喜欢咖啡 (same person, two things); 他喜欢茶,我也喜欢茶 (two people, same thing).
又
又 = 'again / also' for repeated or simultaneous traits. 又...又... pairs two qualities of one subject. 也 connects a parallel between subjects, not within one.
