X 越来越 ...
Reach for this when you want to say something is increasing in one direction over time. '[X] 越来越 [ADJ / VERB]' = 'X is getting more and more [Y].' It's the standard Chinese expression for a trend — weather getting hotter, prices getting higher, people getting busier. Works with adjectives ('越来越快'), psychological verbs ('越来越喜欢'), and modal-like predicates ('越来越想去').

How to Think About It
Literally 'the more (time) comes, the more X' — it bakes time directly into the comparison. Unlike 'X is becoming...,' 越来越 explicitly says 'as time passes, the level increases.' Always followed by something gradable: an adjective or a verb that can be 'more' of ('越来越懂' = 'understand more and more'). Don't pair with one-time action verbs — '他越来越来了' is wrong because 来 isn't gradable.

Common Mistake
Learners insert 很 between 越来越 and the adjective, copying the default 很 + adj pattern: '越来越很热.' That's wrong. 越来越 already supplies the comparative force, so 很 becomes ungrammatical.

Don't Confuse With
越...越...
越 A 越 B = 'the more A, the more B,' linking two changes ('越吃越想吃'). 越来越 links the change to time itself, not to another variable.
更加...
更加 + adj = 'even more X' — a one-step comparison. 越来越 is a continuous increase over time. Pick by whether you're comparing two states or tracking a trend.
渐渐...
渐渐 = 'gradually' — emphasizes slowness of change. 越来越 emphasizes direction and intensity, not pace. They overlap but aren't identical.
