在 + Place + Action
Reach for this when you want to say WHERE an action is happening — 'I eat at home,' 'he works in Beijing,' 'they're listening in the room.' The 在 + place phrase goes BEFORE the verb, not after, which is the opposite of English. The phrase modifies the verb, telling you the setting for the action.

How to Think About It
Chinese stages the scene before the action: who, where, then what they do. English does it backward — 'I eat (action) at home (place).' To sound native, plant the 在 + place phrase right before the verb. Putting it at the end ('我吃饭在家') reads as an English-style translation; native speakers won't say it.
Examples
我在家看电视。
Wǒ zài jiā kàn diànshì.

他们在公园跑步。
Tāmen zài gōngyuán pǎobù.

Common Mistake
Learners follow English word order and put 在 + place AFTER the verb. In Chinese, location nearly always comes before the verb.
我吃饭在家。
我在家吃饭。
Don't Confuse With
在 + Place (alone)
Without a following verb, 在 means 'is located at': 我在家 = I'm at home. Add a verb and 在 becomes 'at' modifying the action.
Verb + 在 + Place
A few verbs (住, 坐, 放, 站) can take 在 after them because the action results in being at a place: 我住在北京. For most action verbs, keep 在 before.
正在 + Verb
正在 marks an action in progress ('currently doing'), not location. 我正在吃饭 = I'm in the middle of eating.
