Subject + 动词 + 结果补语
Reach for Verb + 了 or Verb + 到 when you want to say not just that an action happened but that it landed — completed, reached, succeeded. Bare verbs in Chinese describe activity; result complements pin down outcome. 了 confirms completion in general; 到 specifically marks that the action reached or hit its target (heard it, got it, found it). Together they're the basic toolkit for telling someone an action actually went through.

How to Think About It
Chinese verbs are unfinished by default. 我吃饭 means 'I eat' as an activity, not 'I finished eating.' To turn the action into a completed event, you bolt a result onto the verb: 了 says 'and it was done,' 到 says 'and it reached its target.' Use 到 with perception or pursuit verbs (听到, 看到, 找到, 拿到) — anywhere the action could fail to connect. Use 了 when you just need to mark that the event happened.
Examples
我喝了一杯水。
Wǒ hēle yì bēi shuǐ.
I drank a glass of water.
她终于找到工作了。
Tā zhōngyú zhǎodào gōngzuò le.
She finally found a job.
我没有听到老师说什么。
Wǒ méiyǒu tīngdào lǎoshī shuō shénme.

Common Mistake
Learners use 了 where they need 到, especially with verbs of perception. 我听了 only says 'I listened,' not 'I heard.' If the action could fail to register, you need 到 to lock in success.

Don't Confuse With
Verb + 完
完 means 'finished doing.' 吃完 = ate it all up. Use 完 for completion of the activity; use 了 to mark a punctual event happening.
Verb + 好
好 marks the action being done well or ready. 写好 = written and ready; 写到 wouldn't fit. Pick 好 when emphasis is on readiness.
Verb + 见
见 is a perception result like 到 but stricter — only with sense verbs: 看见, 听见, 闻见. Both 听到 and 听见 work; 听到 is slightly more general.
