HSK 4 Chinese Listening Practice
By Haoshan Hong — incoming Schwarzman Scholar at Tsinghua University, native Mandarin speaker. Updated May 2026.
HSK 4 is the upper-intermediate band — where you stop translating sentence by sentence and start tracking ideas across a paragraph. The vocabulary doubles to ~1,200 words and you handle opinion, comparison, and nuance, not just facts. Fluentide HSK 4 episodes share the moderate-speed pool with HSK 3, but the editorial framing emphasizes opinion pieces, longer news arcs, and the abstract vocabulary you need to express your own views.

Is HSK 4 enough for a job in China?
HSK 4 is the common minimum for entry-level professional jobs in China — service roles, customer support, junior business positions, and some teaching roles for non-native speakers. At about 1,200 cumulative words you can read business email, follow meetings on familiar topics, and explain your work in Mandarin. But HSK 4 is not sufficient for technical roles, client-facing professional work, jobs requiring written reports, or positions in Chinese-only legal or medical environments — those typically require HSK 5 or HSK 5 plus demonstrated business Chinese. If you are aiming at a Chinese-language career path, treat HSK 4 as the entry door and continue to HSK 5 within 12-18 months.
