Is HSK 4 enough for a job in China?

HSK 4 is the usual floor for entry-level work in China — service, support, junior business, some teaching. At about 1,200 words you can read email, follow familiar meetings, and explain your job.

It is not enough for technical, legal, medical, or report-heavy roles. Those usually need HSK 5. Treat HSK 4 as the door, then keep going.

What does HSK 4 listening practice look like?

Follow ideas and speaker attitude across a paragraph, at 160-180 characters per minute, with about 1,200 words and connectors like 因此, 然而, 虽然…但是.

HSK 4 test format: sections, questions, pass mark

HSK 4 has 100 questions — 45 listening, 40 reading, 15 writing. You need 180 / 300 to pass, and the paper runs ~105 min.

Listening alone is 45% of the questions. Speaking is not tested at any HSK level — that is a separate exam, the HSKK.

HSK question counts by sectionListening is the largest section of every HSK paper. HSK 1 has 20 listening and 20 reading questions. HSK 2 has 35 listening and 25 reading. HSK 3 has 40 listening, 30 reading and 10 writing. HSK 4 has 45 listening, 40 reading and 15 writing. HSK 5 has 45 listening, 45 reading and 10 writing. You will still struggle with

technical domains, literary language, dense chengyu, fast debates, and speakers who rely on implication or cultural shorthand.
