HSK 1 is the very first step in Chinese proficiency. At this level, you are learning to understand basic greetings, numbers, dates, simple questions, and the most common everyday expressions. Content uses slow, clearly articulated Mandarin with the most basic vocabulary.

HSK 1 is the easiest HSK level by design — it certifies that an English speaker has just started learning Mandarin. The test covers ~150 cumulative words, 40 questions total (20 listening + 20 reading), and the passing score is 120 / 200, which most candidates clear comfortably. Speech in the listening section is slow and clearly articulated, around 80-100 characters per minute, far below native broadcast pace. Most learners pass HSK 1 in 1.5 to 4 months: 60 minutes daily of comprehensible input gets you ready in roughly six weeks, 30 minutes daily takes about 3-4 months. The biggest mistake is over-investing in character writing — HSK 1 does not require it. Time is better spent on listening hours so the tones and rhythm of Mandarin become familiar.

What does HSK 1 listening practice look like?

HSK 1 listening practice is the gentlest start in Mandarin: very slow speech (80-100 characters per minute), only HSK 1 vocabulary, simple sentence structures (Subject-Verb-Object, basic question particles), and topics tightly bounded to greetings, family, food, time, and daily routines.
