How hard is HSK 1 and how long does it take?

HSK 1 is the easiest level — an English speaker who has just started Mandarin. The test is about 150 words and 40 questions (20 listening, 20 reading). You need 120 / 200 to pass. Speech is slow and clear, about 80-100 characters per minute.

Most learners pass in 1.5 to 4 months: about six weeks at 60 minutes a day, or 3–4 months at 30 minutes. Skip character writing for now. HSK 1 does not require it — listen until the tones feel familiar.

What does HSK 1 listening practice look like?

Very slow speech (80-100 characters per minute), only HSK 1 words, and simple sentences. Fluentide stories are 2–3 minutes and stay inside the ~150-word list. Anything heavier is flagged so you can tap it.

Each story has a Chinese transcript, pinyin, and line-by-line English you can turn off. Most absolute beginners can follow an HSK 1 story at about 70% on the first listen by week 4 of daily practice.
