Hours left are HSK 4's 600 to 900 minus the cumulative hours of the level you finished (75 to 100 for HSK 1, 150 to 200 for HSK 2, 300 to 450 for HSK 3).

Where HSK 4 sits on the ladder

HSK 4 is about a third of the way to the Foreign Service Institute's 2,200 class hours for professional Mandarin. HSK 5 adds roughly 500 to 600 hours more (1,100 to 1,500 in total).

What the 600 to 900 hours leave out

The new HSK is bigger. HSK 3.0 level 4 has 2,000 words; the HSK 2.0 level the hours come from had 1,200. Expect the high end of the range, or more.

Hours are not all equal. These are hours of focused study. An hour of listening you mostly understand counts; an hour with the audio on in the background does not.

The exam audio is quick, and plays once. The official HSK 4 listening recordings run about 195 to 203 characters a minute with no replay. Our Intermediate stories run about 222, so the speed itself is practisable. See speed by level, measured.
