当一次技术故障让全美停飞:American Airlines 的那一个小时
When One Technical Failure Grounded the Whole Country: American Airlines' Lost Hour
An intermediate Chinese listening story: a brief IT failure grounded all American Airlines flights nationwide, cascading into hours of delays, and, coming days after the T-Mobile outage, a reminder of our dependence on invisible systems.
This is an HSK 5-6 Chinese listening episode that runs about 2 minutes. The full Mandarin script is shown with tap-for-pinyin and a line-by-line English translation, so you can listen and read at once — comprehensible input in the sense of Stephen Krashen's i+1 theory. It teaches 12 key vocabulary words such as 消息、安全、解释 and walks through 3 grammar patterns, each explained in English with examples. The same news story is retold at 4 difficulty levels — use the level selector above to find the version that is challenging but still understandable for you.
七月二十八号傍晚,对不少准备坐飞机的美国人来说,行程被一则消息打乱了。
On the evening of July 28th, for many Americans about to catch a flight, their plans were upended by one piece of news.
美国最大的航空公司之一 American Airlines 宣布,因为一次技术故障,暂时停飞旗下所有航班。
American Airlines, one of the biggest airlines in the U.S., announced that because of a technical failure, it was temporarily grounding all of its flights.
公司解释说,当晚,一部分系统的连接突然出了问题。
The company explained that that evening, part of its systems' connectivity had suddenly failed.
出于安全考虑,他们向美国航空管理部门申请了全国范围的停飞,也就是让所有飞机都暂时停在地面。
Out of caution, they asked U.S. aviation authorities for a nationwide ground stop, keeping every plane on the ground for the time being.
在那短短的一段时间里,从东海岸到西海岸,美航的航班几乎全部停摆。
For that brief stretch, from the East Coast to the West, American's flights were almost entirely frozen.
机场里,一块块航班信息屏上,"延误"两个字不断增加,登机口挤满了不知所措的旅客。
In airports, the word "delayed" kept multiplying on flight boards, and gates filled with bewildered passengers.
所幸,这次故障并没有持续太久,前后不到一个小时,系统便逐渐恢复,飞机重新排队起飞。
Mercifully, the failure didn't last long; within an hour the systems gradually recovered, and planes lined up to take off again.
但航空的特点是环环相扣:一个环节卡住,后面的航班、机组和旅客,都会跟着连锁晚点。
But aviation is a chain: when one link jams, the flights, crews, and passengers behind it all get dragged into cascading delays.
所以即便系统很快恢复,那一晚由此产生的延误和误机,仍然花了很长时间才慢慢消化。
So even after the systems recovered, the delays and missed flights from that night took a long time to slowly clear.
更值得注意的是,就在几天前,电信巨头 T-Mobile 也刚刚经历过一次全国性的大故障。
What's more striking is that just days earlier, telecom giant T-Mobile had suffered a nationwide outage of its own.
短短一周内,通讯和航空两大系统接连出问题,像是给所有人提了个醒。
Two big systems, telecom and aviation, stumbling within a single week is like a warning to everyone.
当越来越多的日常,被交给一套看不见的技术系统,它的每一次小小抖动,都可能让无数人的生活,瞬间卡在原地。
As more and more of daily life is handed to an invisible technical system, each tiny wobble of it can freeze countless people's lives right where they stand.
