English transcript reference

On September the first, John Ternus formally took over Apple.

On September the ninth, he has to walk onto a launch-event stage.

Eight days in between.

And what he has to hold up is the biggest change in form this company's iPhone has undergone in nineteen years — a phone that folds in half.

A CEO eight days into the job, making his first public appearance staked on an entirely new product form.

Today we are going to take this apart: why this phone is only arriving now, and what the timing means.

Let's get the product straight first.

This foldable iPhone uses an inward-folding design, with two screens.

Closed, the one facing out is five point three inches — close to the feel of an ordinary iPhone, usable one-handed, fits in a pocket.

Opened, the inner screen is seven point eight inches, near enough to a small-format book.

Video, documents, split-screen multitasking — the experience is simply not in the same class as the small screen.

Starting price two thousand dollars and up.

That figure is roughly double a flagship of the same generation.

The question genuinely worth chewing on is this: folding screens are not new, so why has Apple held off until now?

The first commercial folding phone went on sale in 2019 — a full seven years ago.

For seven years Apple stood on the sideline and watched.

The reason is not complicated: the engineering here is genuinely hard.

There are three hard parts.

First, the crease.

A flexible screen bent along the same line tens of thousands of times takes on permanent deformation in the material, and you can see the mark the moment light catches it side-on.

Second, the hinge.

A user opens and closes it a hundred-odd times a day, and the hinge has to feel right while staying tight, silent and square for years.

It also has to bring the two screen halves flush when closed, with no gap that would let them wear against each other.

Third, dust ingress.

A traditional slab phone is a sealed structure; dust cannot get in.

A folding phone necessarily has a seam, and a single grain of sand reaching the hinge or getting under the screen can leave a permanent scratch.

That first wave of folding phones in 2019 came apart on precisely this — review units reached the press and started failing within days, and the manufacturer was forced to postpone the launch and rework the structure.

Apple watched the whole thing happen, and only then moved.

This is in fact Apple's long-standing pattern, not something new to this launch.

Before the iPod, MP3 players were everywhere.

Before the iPhone, smartphones had already been selling for years.

Apple is almost never the first one in; it prefers to let others fall into the holes, let the supply chain get yields up, let users prove the demand exists, and then produce a more finished version.

Supporters call this restraint and patience.

But the opposing case holds up just as well, and it has been getting louder in recent years.

Critics will say seven years is not patience, it is slowness.

The more telling point is this: folding phones still account for only around one and a half percent of the smartphone market.

Put differently, Apple waited seven years, and what it waited for may be a category that never truly took off.

If a form factor has failed to go mainstream in seven years, the line between "waiting for the technology to mature" and "missing the window" gets very hard to draw.

The two-thousand-dollar price says Apple knows this perfectly well: this machine is a public technical statement, a posture aimed at the market.

Now back to the people.

Tim Cook ran Apple for well over a decade.

He inherited a company that had just lost its founder, and handed over one whose market value has touched three trillion dollars.

His strongest suit was supply chain and operations, turning a brutally complex manufacturing system into Apple's moat.

His successor, Ternus, comes from hardware engineering — he previously ran hardware development for the iPhone and the Mac.

Handing off from an operations expert to an engineer is a signal worth reading: it usually means the company believes the next stretch will be won on the product itself.

And the first fight of his tenure is a phone with a brand-new form, a high price, and no proven hit anywhere in the industry.

That opening is direct, to put it kindly, and cushionless, to put it less kindly.

On the ninth, alongside the foldable, there will be an iPhone 18 Pro, new watches and a new generation of the operating system.

But every camera will be pointed at the one that folds.

The questions it has to answer are quite concrete: is the crease visible, will the hinge loosen within a few years, and is two thousand dollars buying a finished product.

Two questions to leave you with.

The first is concrete: if a phone could open from pocket-sized to the size of a book, but cost two thousand dollars, would you buy it?

The second is bigger: when a company makes a long habit of never being first, is that mature restraint, or is it slowly losing the capacity to take a risk?

There is no standard answer to these two questions, but they are worth thinking through slowly.
