This August, an engineer battalion at Fort Stewart in Georgia posted a re-enlistment offer, and it was blunt: serve two more years, get a four-day pass.
Not any four days — the twentieth to the twenty-third of November.
The reason needs no guessing: GTA 6 drops on the nineteenth.
So those four days are precisely the first four after release.
No reporting back, no roll call — you play the four days out at home.
The stated aims on the offer are three: retention, morale, and rewarding long service; the first two are true and the third is packaging.
The sign-up window ran the first to the fourteenth of August, two weeks.
A hundred and thirty soldiers in the battalion were eligible; when the window closed, twenty had signed.
Twenty people, trading two years for four days.
Do the arithmetic first: two years is seven hundred and thirty days, four days is four days — a hundred and eighty-two and a half days converts into one.
Laid out like that the ratio is close to absurd; but the real arithmetic is not there.
Nobody signed away two years for the sake of four days.
Closer to the truth: these twenty were already planning to stay, and the four days were the last small push.
So what is interesting about this offer is not what it gives, but that it admits something the army does not usually say out loud:
Your time is not yours.
What time you get up, when the lights go out, where your body is — none of that is your call.
Against that background, "these four days are yours to arrange" is a sentence with completely different weight.
Rockstar presumably never imagined its release date turning into a date on a personnel document.
But that is exactly where GTA 6 now sits: not merely a game, but a national coordinate in time.
And a final layer, the shakiest one: GTA 6 has already slipped twice — a year the first time, another six months the second.
What if it slips again?
The two years run regardless, not a day less.
The four days stay on the paper, waiting to be redeemed.
Think about it:
If someone wanted to buy two years of your life, how many days would you ask for?

What vocabulary does this episode teach?

To express one quantity in terms of another. Two years 折算 into four days.
Against the 前提 that your time is not your own, four free days change meaning entirely.
Close to ridiculous. The exchange rate is 近乎荒唐.
Literally wrapping; here, the presentable reason given for something.
A document that lets you go somewhere or be off duty. The prize here is a four-day 通行证.
The spirit of a group of troops. One of the three stated aims.
Literally "the sweet bit" — a small benefit offered to tip a decision.
A fixed point you locate other things by. The game has become a national 时间坐标.
