On the map, there's a line that may be the world's most jarring divide between rich and poor.

It's at Ceuta — a small piece of land belonging to Spain, yet stranded on the northern tip of the African continent, sharing a border directly with Morocco.

In other words, if you just climb that wire fence, or swim around it through the sea, you step from Africa straight into Europe.

On one side, a wealthy Europe with jobs, welfare, and a future; on the other, unemployment, poverty, and a reality with no hope in sight.

The gap between these two worlds is compressed into just a few kilometers of coastline.

At the end of July, this seam suddenly burst open.

In just a few days, nearly 60,000 people — the vast majority young men — surged toward Ceuta like a tide.

Some walked along the shore; some jumped straight into the sea, swimming around the breakwater to the far side.

But the current was strong, the breakwater slick, and there were simply too many people; tragedy was almost inevitable.

By early August, at least seventy-some were confirmed dead, and some local officials said the real number might top 80.

Some drowned; some were crushed to death by the crowd while climbing the fence.

Facing a situation out of control, Spain quickly deployed the army and set up a 500-meter barrier across the water.

Spain's Prime Minister Sánchez also went to Ceuta in person — a leader once known for being friendly to migrants, now facing the thorniest test of his term.

What's truly piercing about this is that it turns an abstract phrase — “migrant crisis” — back into individual people.

They aren't numbers; they're young men each willing to bet their lives on a “better life.”

When a sea just a few kilometers wide separates heaven from hell, it's hard to simply say they were wrong.

One last question: if you'd been born on the other side of that sea, would you, too, want to swim across?
