There was a time when, in American pop music, few people were more powerful or wealthier than Diddy.
He single-handedly made star after star, ran companies, threw parties — his name was almost a synonym for "success."
Yet this very man now sits in a prison cell of less than ten square meters, with no one beside him.
The story starts with last year's trial that gripped the whole country.
Prosecutors had originally charged him with several very serious counts, including racketeering and sex trafficking.
But the jury ultimately found the most serious charges didn't hold, and acquitted him of them.
What actually convicted him were two counts tied to "transporting others for prostitution."
This year, the judge sentenced him on that basis to over four years and sent him to a low-security federal prison in New Jersey.
For a while, outsiders assumed he'd quietly serve out the rest of his time.
But just last week, word came out of the prison: he'd gotten into a fight with another inmate.
Reportedly the other man hurled an insult first, the two grappled, and guards had to pull them apart.
As punishment, the prison locked him alone in a cramped isolation cell — what's known as "solitary confinement."
There, he's almost entirely cut off from the outside world, with even basic movement and contact restricted.
At the same time, his lawyers haven't let up.
Earlier this year they appealed the case to the federal Second Circuit Court of Appeals, insisting the original sentence was too heavy.
One question they raised, the judges said, no federal appeals court has ever truly answered before.
But so far the court still hasn't ruled, and everything hangs in the balance.
As things stand, the earliest he could walk out that gate is April 2028.
From the center of a spotlighted stage to a solitary cell, Diddy took less than three years to travel all the way from the clouds to the ground.
It also has many people revisiting an old question: can wealth and fame really keep a person safe?
