英国爱尔兰之间一个 Greenlink 工程
它是一条海底电缆国家起来一边时候可以送给另一边
造价亿千万英镑大约十八万户人家
这种电缆一个问题必须海滩上岸
设计好的路线正好经过 Freshwater West

A fake grave for a fictional character moved a £430 million undersea cable.

It happened at a beach in southwest Wales called Freshwater West.

First, where the grave came from.

There is a character in the Harry Potter series called Dobby.

He is a house-elf, working at the start for a nasty family, unable to leave.

Later Harry finds a way around it, and gives him a sock.

By the rules of that world, once a master gives an elf clothing, the elf is free.

So for anyone who has seen the film, a sock is not a sock. It is freedom.

In the last instalment, Dobby dies saving Harry and the others.

That scene was shot on this beach, Freshwater West.

After the film came out, the thing happened by itself.

Someone built a small grave on that beach out of the stones lying there.

Then people came, one after another.

They brought stones, drawings, handwritten letters — and most of all, socks.

Sock after sock, pressed under the stones, piling up for over a decade.

This needs saying plainly: there is nothing underneath.

Dobby is not a person and never existed. That is not a burial site. It is a heap of stones.

And yet every year tens of thousands of people drive out there specially, stand for a while, leave a sock, and go.

Now the other side of it.

Between Britain and Ireland there is a project called Greenlink.

It is an undersea cable linking the two countries' power grids, so that when one side has a surplus it can send it to the other.

It cost four hundred and thirty million pounds and can supply about three hundred and eighty thousand households.

This kind of cable has one problem: it has to come ashore somewhere.

And the designed route passed straight through Freshwater West.

More precisely, straight through the patch where everyone piles their stones.

Ordinarily this would not have been news.

But a British television programme ran a segment on where the cable would land.

After it aired, the company's phone lines were overwhelmed.

The callers were hundreds of Harry Potter fans.

Their request was simple: do not touch that spot.

And then came the outcome most people would not have predicted.

The company actually changed it.

They recalculated the route so the cable ran around the side, clear of the pile of stones.

The project went live last year and is running normally.

There is one detail here worth pausing on.

The rerouted path runs past a set of genuine Bronze Age remains.

Those are traces left by people who really existed, thousands of years ago.

The contractors carefully avoided those too, and did no damage.

But put the two together: a fictional character's fake grave, and real people's remains from thousands of years ago, on the same beach, given the same protection.

And only one of them made a few hundred people pick up the phone.

Think about it: does a place matter because something really happened there, or because enough people believe something happened there?
