On September 17, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Cincinnati Reds eight to two despite missing Shohei Ohtani.

The win gave them a fifth consecutive National League West title.

It was their thirteenth division title in fourteen years and their fourteenth straight playoff appearance.

With an eight-to-two win, the division title was theirs, but the team still had a larger goal.

Before the game began, Shohei Ohtani was on the fifteen-day injured list.

Another important hitter, Andy Pages, was on the injured list too.

Missing those two hitters, the Dodgers needed their healthy players to step up.

Kyle Tucker did just that, collecting four hits in one game.

He also drove in three runs, helping bring teammates home.

Four hits from one player are enough to trouble any opponent.

If you follow baseball, you know Tucker was a triple short of hitting for the cycle.

To hit for the cycle, a player needs a single, double, triple, and home run in the same game.

That triple did not come, so Tucker did not complete the cycle.

Even without the triple, his four hits and three runs batted in left a clear mark on the score.

Look at the final score: the Dodgers scored eight, while the Reds scored only two.

The hitting was worth discussing, and the pitching arrangement was unusual too.

This time the Dodgers used a bullpen game, sending several pitchers out for shorter stretches.

From the first through the third inning, no Reds batter reached base.

In the fourth, the Reds scored one run on a solo home run.

Then the next pitcher worked four innings without allowing the Reds to score again.

In the final inning, the Reds added a second run but could not catch the Dodgers.

Tucker kept getting hits, while pitchers took turns protecting the lead; that is how the eight-to-two result came about.

After the last out, players entered the locker room and sprayed one another with champagne.

After all, a fifth straight West title gave them good reason to celebrate that night.

Over the past fourteen years, the Dodgers missed this division title only once.

Year after year, that record shows how consistently they have stayed near the top.

For the Dodgers, though, the West title is only one trophy before the playoffs.

The World Series champion will not be known until all the playoff rounds are over.

The Dodgers already won the World Series in both 2024 and 2025.

This year they hope to become the first team since the 1998–2000 Yankees to win three straight titles.

But that remains a goal; today's division win is not a third World Series trophy.

Even as champagne was still flowing, manager Dave Roberts knew the team had work left to do.

Ohtani and Pages were out, and the pitching rotation was not yet at full strength.

At the time, nine regular-season games remained.

If the injured players return in time, the Dodgers will have more choices in the playoffs.

If they cannot yet play, this eight-to-two win has already given their teammates an example.

Tucker got four hits, several pitchers worked in sequence, and the Dodgers could still win with players missing.

Even so, playoff opponents and pressure will be different from a September division game.

Today's champagne celebrates the West division title.

Whether they can open the next bottle depends on the games still to come.
