The Man Who Bought Volvo Just Handed His Carmaker to Someone Who Is Not Family

About this story

On 17 August 2026 Geely Auto announced that founder Li Shufu, 63, was stepping down as chairman. He built the group from fridge parts and motorcycles, was refused a car-making licence, and told officials: please give me one chance to fail. He got it in 2001, bought Volvo from Ford for $1.8bn in 2010, and led China's domestic brands on sales by 2017. His successor is An Conghui, a professional manager raised inside the company — not his son, which is the default in Chinese private business. Li barred his own brothers from management once carmaking began, and said in 2006 that the company could not be run by him alone. Chinese listening practice at four levels.
English transcript reference

On the seventeenth of August this year, Geely Auto issued an announcement.

The announcement was short, only a few sentences.

Founder Li Shufu is no longer chairman.

It looks like a small thing, but what it answers is a question very few Chinese companies can avoid.

The question is: I am getting old, so who gets the company?

First, let's be clear about Li Shufu himself.

He is sixty-three this year.

Sixty-three is not old among Chinese company bosses.

He could carry on for many more years.

His company started in 1986, when he was twenty-three.

At the beginning it had nothing to do with cars.

First fridge parts, then fridges, then motorcycles.

The motorcycle stretch genuinely made money.

They sold so well that buyers queued at the factory gate waiting for stock.

He had so much money he did not need to do any other business.

So when he said he was going to build cars, a lot of people did not understand.

He already had money — why do something that could so easily fail?

Building cars needed far more money than he had in hand.

In 1997 he went ahead anyway.

What blocked him was not money, it was the licence.

At the time, building cars required the state's approval, and he could not get that piece of paper.

Without it, a car could be built but not sold.

He went to the official responsible and said a line a great many people would later remember.

He said: please give me one chance to fail.

Please give me one chance to fail.

In 2001, he got it.

From wanting to do it to being allowed to do it, four years passed.

What really changed Geely was one thing that happened in 2010.

That year, Geely bought Volvo Cars from Ford.

The price was one point eight billion dollars.

One point eight billion dollars was a very large sum at the time.

A Chinese company buying an old European marque — a lot of people thought it simply could not be done.

Had Li Shufu not pushed it through the whole way, it would not have happened.

But it did.

After buying Volvo, Geely's cars got better and the brand carried further.

A lot of people only started paying attention to Geely from that point.

Later he kept buying abroad.

Buying in Malaysia, buying in Britain, buying in Germany too.

Now back to the handover.

A handover simply means: I stop, and you take over.

In Chinese private companies, the person who takes over is usually the son.

The boss gets old, the son steps up — that is the shape everyone is familiar with.

Plenty of people do it this way; very few do not.

Cao Dewang, who makes car glass, retired last year and handed the company to his eldest son.

After the founder of Wanxiang Group died, the person who took over was his son as well.

But Li Shufu did not do this.

He did not hand the company to his own child.

The person he chose is called An Conghui, and his surname is not Li.

An Conghui worked his way up inside Geely step by step.

People inside Geely were not surprised by this outcome.

Because the signs had been there for a long time.

When Li Shufu first went into business, he did it together with his brothers.

But once he began building cars, he dropped the family way of doing things.

He did not let his brothers hold management positions in the company.

Brothers could be shareholders, but not managers.

At the time, that was not at all common.

In 2002 he also brought in an outsider as general manager.

Later, the process of buying Volvo showed him how much company governance matters.

In a 2006 interview, he said something.

He said: this company cannot be run by me alone.

He said that very early.

In the same interview he also said Geely should be a company that lasts a hundred years.

Put those two sentences together and this handover was not a spur-of-the-moment decision.

It should be said that Li Shufu has not retired completely.

He has simply changed position.

He is still there; he is just not at the front.

He remains chairman of Geely Holding Group.

Finally, it is worth comparing ages.

Li Shufu is sixty-three, BYD's Wang Chuanfu is sixty, Great Wall's Wei Jianjun is sixty-two.

The other two are still hands-on; only Li Shufu has stepped back at this point.

Three men of about the same age, doing it differently.

Someone in the industry put it very accurately.

He said the handover is a threshold every hundred-year company must cross, and plenty of very successful companies fall at it.

For a company to last a hundred years, the first hard barrier is the handover.

Now put yourself in it.

You have a very big company, you are old, and your child wants to take over.

Do you hand it to them, or to someone who has been with you for twenty years?
