This man

was named Kendal Ascher.

He was fifty-six.

Estée Lauder,

a senior executive.

At the company,

what he oversaw

were top luxury brands,

Tom Ford Beauty,

and Jo Malone.

These brands,

any one of them,

are what many people

dream of.

At Estée Lauder,

he worked for

a full twenty-five years.

You could say

his whole life

was spent dealing

with 'beauty'.

His job

was to study

how to make people

more beautiful and younger.

And yet,

exactly such a man,

who understood 'beauty' best,

in the end,

fell

on the road

of chasing 'beauty'.

Earlier this year,

he suddenly died.

At first,

no one knew the cause.

Not until this week

did the New York authorities

make public

his cause of death.

And this cause

left everyone

silent.

He died

from a cosmetic injection

he had received.

This injection,

you may have heard of —

it's what we commonly call

a 'filler injection',

or a 'skin-booster' and the like.

A doctor injects it

into the skin,

to fill in wrinkles,

making the face

look fuller

and younger.

So,

how could such a tiny injection

possibly

take a life?

Here,

let's explain briefly.

Normally,

this material

should stay in

the surface layer of the skin.

But

in very rare cases,

it may,

by accident,

be injected into

a blood vessel.

Once in the blood vessel,

it

follows the blood

and flows everywhere.

In the end,

these 'foreign bodies',

along the vessels,

reached his lungs,

and like a plug,

blocked

the vessel dead.

In medicine,

this is

called an 'embolism'.

And so,

he suffered

acute respiratory failure,

and his body

collapsed all at once.

It's said

that when he passed,

he was in his loved one's arms.

He first felt

a wave of dizziness,

then,

very soon,

he was gone.

Officials said

this was an accident.

Hearing this,

you might be afraid.

Should you

never dare

get a cosmetic injection again?

Not so fast.

We need to see the facts clearly.

In fact,

this kind of injection,

the vast majority of the time,

is safe.

Data show

that in the US alone,

there are, each year,

over 5.5 million

such injections.

Those that truly go wrong

are the rarest

of the rare.

A doctor also said

that though the risk is small,

it truly exists,

and in severe cases

may even

cause blindness.

So,

what this case

really wants to remind us

is not 'don't get beautiful',

but rather:

any act of putting something

into the body

is never

absolutely zero-risk.

Finding a proper clinic,

a professional doctor,

matters far more

than saving a little money.

Speaking of this,

We live in an age

that prizes 'good looks' more and more.

Wanting to be beautiful

is not wrong at all.

But this case

is like a
