English transcript reference

On the website LinkedIn, people write posts — about work, about ideas.

They all used to be written by people. Not any more.

Now a great many posts are machine-generated, and when you read one you may well not be able to tell.

The sentences run properly, the structure is tidy.

But when you finish, you get a feeling you cannot quite name: as though you had seen it somewhere before.

On the thirtieth of July, LinkedIn added a button — inside the three dots on every post, carrying one sentence: this seems like AI slop.

Whichever post strikes you as machine-written, you press it, and that counts as a report.

Three weeks later, the figure came out: more than a million.

More than a million people pressed the same button.

Was it any use?

LinkedIn says it was: they put the reports together with their own classification system and retuned the whole thing.

The result: content judged to be machine-generated lost forty percent of its views.

And there is another figure worth pausing on: a detection company sampled the longer posts on LinkedIn.

Out of a hundred, forty-one were entirely machine-generated.

Not a person writing and a machine polishing — machine-written from beginning to end.

So that button is really an unorganised act of collective statement.

More than a million people each read a post, each arrived at the same judgement, and each reached out and pressed the same place.

The most interesting part is that nobody taught them how to tell: no course, no instructions, no correct answer.

They simply read, and read, and felt something was off.

Think about it:

You read a passage — can you tell whether a machine wrote it?
