Laid Off and Still Job Hunting, He Has Helped Pull Nearly 60,000 Fake Jobs Off LinkedIn

About this story

Jay Jones, a Chicago-area copywriter laid off in late 2023, calls himself The Profiler. While still looking for work, he has tracked nearly 60,000 fake job listings and flagged about 7,000 scam profiles — like five "Linda Anthony" recruiters sharing one photo, which vanished once he posted about them. He explains how scammers sell résumé help, harvest driver's licenses and Social Security numbers, and hijack forgotten verified LinkedIn accounts, and why LinkedIn's 14-day appeal window made him furious.
English transcript reference

Have you ever looked for a job online?

There are lots of jobs online, but some of them are fake.

People who post fake jobs are called scammers.

Scammers want your money, and they also want your name and your ID.

Today we're talking about an American who hunts for scammers online every day.

His name is Jay, and he's thirty-nine this year.

Before, Jay wrote ads at a company.

Almost three years ago, the company let him go.

Jay lost his job, and he started looking for work online.

Before long, he ran into a scammer.

The scammer said: your résumé isn't well written.

A résumé is the sheet of paper about yourself that you write when you look for a job.

The scammer said: give me money, I'll help you fix your résumé, and then you'll find a job.

Just as Jay was about to pay, he realized: this is a scam.

From then on, Jay has been hunting for scammers and fake jobs online.

Lots of fake jobs are on one website, called LinkedIn.

LinkedIn is a job website where many companies look for people.

So far, Jay has found nearly sixty thousand fake jobs.

He's also found about seven thousand fake accounts.

An account is your name and photo on a website.

He reports them to LinkedIn so LinkedIn will delete them.

One night, just after midnight, Jay saw a woman named Linda.

Linda said she was recruiting for a company — that is, helping a company find people.

Then Jay found another Linda.

In the end, he found five Lindas in all.

The five Lindas had exactly the same photo, and they were all new accounts.

Jay says this shows the five Lindas were made together, and not one of them was a real person.

Jay posted about it online, and the five Lindas quickly disappeared.

He said: turn on the light, and the bugs run away.

So what do scammers do once they have your name and ID?

Jay says they sell them to other people.

Jay has a little tip for everyone.

If someone's last name can also be used as a first name, like Anthony, take a second look.

Jay also found an even nastier trick.

Some people haven't used LinkedIn in a long time, so scammers steal their accounts.

Then the scammers use those accounts to say: I'm hiring.

These accounts used to belong to real people, so people are more likely to believe them.

LinkedIn says it can catch almost all the scammers.

In the second half of last year, it shut down nearly ninety million fake accounts.

But Jay thinks there are still plenty of scammers who haven't been caught.

Jay is still looking for work, and he also drives for a ride-hailing app.

Some people are very grateful to him and send him a little money online.

Jay has two children.

He says: when my kids grow up and hear what their dad did, they'll know I meant it.

When you've looked for work, have you ever run into a scammer?
