Last time: to pay for grandma's treatment, Zhou Wan scraped together every cent she could, and used a round of English tutoring to tie herself to Lu Xixiao — rich, but with no one to look after him.
那个夏天，这场说好只是交易的关系，正在慢慢变成别的东西。
That summer, the relationship they'd called "just a deal" was slowly turning into something else.

先说一个很暖的画面。
First, a very warm scene.
学校搞了一个放飞心愿的活动，让大家把愿望写下来，绑在气球上，放到天上去。
The school held a "send your wishes to the sky" event, where everyone wrote down a wish, tied it to a balloon, and let it float up.
陆西骁本来对这种事一点兴趣都没有。
Lu Xixiao had zero interest in this kind of thing.
可他一听说周挽会去，二话不说就来了，还抱来了一大捧五颜六色的气球。
But the moment he heard Zhou Wan would go, he came without a word — carrying a huge armful of colorful balloons.
他没写自己的愿望，反倒站在周挽旁边，认认真真地说：我希望你想要的，都能实现。
He didn't write his own wish; instead he stood next to Zhou Wan and said, earnestly: I hope everything you want comes true.

Meeting again now, her mother's face held no warmth, and she didn't even ask whether grandma was alive or dead.
原来这些年，她早已嫁进了陆家，成了陆西骁名义上的继母。
It turned out that over the years, she had long since married into the Lu family and become Lu Xixiao's stepmother in name.
换句话说，周挽和陆西骁，如今算是名义上的兄妹，只是没有血缘。
In other words, Zhou Wan and Lu Xixiao were now step-siblings in name, just without any blood tie.
妈妈最怕的，就是这层关系被人知道。

What he didn't know was that, in those days, he'd been hiding in the repair shop, hammer blow by hammer blow, forging her a necklace shaped like an arrow.
项链快做好的时候，他却听见周挽当着别人的面，淡淡地说：我和陆西骁不是朋友，从来都不是，以后也不会是。
Just as the necklace was nearly finished, he overheard Zhou Wan say, flatly, in front of others: Lu Xixiao and I are not friends, never were, and never will be.

The most painful part comes next: one day, Zhou Wan stumbled onto a few thugs beating Lu Xixiao.
她明明嘴上说着不是朋友，脚下却没有半点犹豫，冲进去死死护着他。
Though her mouth said they weren't friends, her feet didn't hesitate for an instant — she rushed in and shielded him with everything she had.
