Let me lay out the background first, because how much this matters depends on knowing how hard it is.

Professional baseball has two roles that barely overlap: pitcher and batter.

The pitcher's job is to throw the ball; the batter's job is to hit it.

For more than a hundred years, essentially nobody in the top league has been able to do both well at once.

The reason is not mysterious.

Pitching is an act about as unfriendly to the shoulder and elbow as anything gets, and one outing needs several days of recovery.

A batter, meanwhile, has to play day after day to keep his timing.

One demands rest, the other demands continuity. The two sets of requirements fight each other.

So the division of labour is inevitable. It is not a matter of tradition.

Shohei Ohtani is the exception to this rule.

He is Japanese, currently playing in the American league, serving as both a starting pitcher and a middle-of-the-order batter.

More to the point, he has reached the top tier on both sides.

This year as a pitcher: fourteen starts, eight wins and two losses, a 1.79 ERA, and ninety-five strikeouts in eighty-five and a third innings.

As a batter: a .277 average, thirty home runs, and eleven stolen bases.

Those two lines of numbers, in the same season, have never been written by anyone else in the modern history of the sport.

Then came July.

After the game on 3 July, he has not taken the mound again.

The problem is not one thing. It is several stacked on top of each other.

Soreness in the right biceps, a left knee that has been bothering him for months, and on 3 September neck and right-arm discomfort during an at-bat.

On 28 August he tried one bullpen session.

After it, the biceps problem got worse instead of better, and that turned out to be his last time throwing.

In early September he missed four consecutive games because of it.

On 7 September he returned to the lineup, and the same day he said it plainly.

He said he would "most likely" not pitch again this year.

The wording leaves a little room, but the meaning is clear: his pitching role for this season ends here.

The team's manager put it more directly.

He said: of course he loves pitching, and he loves being a two-way player.

But the next half-sentence is the point — he said that right now, doing it does not make sense.

Put the two statements together and you can hear that this was a decision made jointly, not one person talking the other into it.

Ohtani gave his own feelings through his interpreter.

He said he was disappointed, but that he wants to make this year into an experience he can use later.

I think that sentence is worth remembering more than the statistics are.

He did not say he was finished as a two-way player.

He said: this year, do one of them first.

The difference between those is large.

One is giving up an identity. The other is acknowledging the limit of one season.

Step back a little and a more general problem comes into view.

When we argue about whether someone can do two things, what we usually ask is "does he have the ability".

But what actually decides the outcome is a different question: can the demands these two things place on one body both be met in the same stretch of time?

Ability can come in two portions. Time and the body come in one.

Ohtani spent the last few years proving the first thing. What he ran into this year is the second.
