There's a recent news story.
It's getting talked about both in the sports world and in the business world.
Here's what happened.
June 1.
NBA star Curry.
With Chinese sports brand Li-Ning.
Signed a ten-year contract.
The contract amount is about four hundred million US dollars.
Today we're going to talk about this.
First let me briefly introduce both sides.
On one side is Curry.
Curry is thirty-eight now.
He has played for the Warriors for over a decade.
He has won four championships.
And won two MVPs.
He is one of the most famous NBA stars of the past decade.
And, he is extremely popular in China.
How popular?
He has been to China seven times.
Each time, tens of thousands of fans were chasing him.
So the name "Curry."
Among Chinese young people.
Has a recognition level roughly equivalent to "Jordan."
On the other side is Li-Ning.
Li-Ning is a big Chinese sports brand.
Makes sneakers, sportswear.
Same as Nike and Adidas.
But Li-Ning was, earlier on, China's own brand.
Li-Ning, the company, is now listed in Hong Kong.
It's one of the largest Chinese sports brands.
So why did the two sides sign?
Let me pull the timeline back a bit.
Curry wasn't always at Li-Ning.
He used to be at an American company called Under Armour.
He stayed at Under Armour for thirteen years.
Thirteen years is a long time.
He had his own brand there.
Called "Curry Brand."
He himself was the boss of this brand.
But last November.
Curry and Under Armour split up.
Why?
Not because he wasn't doing well.
It's because Under Armour, the company, hasn't been doing well in recent years.
The company's stock has been falling.
Investment in Curry's brand kept shrinking.
So the two sides couldn't keep going.
They split amicably.
After the split.
All the companies came chasing Curry.
Nike came.
Adidas came.
Several Chinese brands also came.
Reportedly, Li-Ning wasn't the one offering the most money.
There were other companies that offered more than Li-Ning.
But Curry ended up choosing Li-Ning.
Why?
He himself gave one reason.
His Warriors teammate, Butler.
And his longtime friend who he used to play with, Wade.
Both of them were already wearing Li-Ning's shoes.
So Curry tried their shoes.
After trying them, he thought: "These shoes really aren't bad."
So he chose Li-Ning.
On the surface.
The reason he gave is "the shoes are good."
But everyone knows.
The real reason is definitely more than that.
Let's now talk about.
Why this contract is so big.
There are four numbers.
Listen to them.
The first number: four hundred million US dollars.
Four hundred million dollars.
Is one of the largest sneaker contracts in NBA history.
The second number: ten years.
Ten years is a very long partnership.
Showing that what Li-Ning wants isn't a short-term deal.
It's wanting to tie Curry's brand.
And Li-Ning together for the long run.
The third number: thirty-eight.
Curry is thirty-eight this year.
For a sports star.
He has only a few more playing years.
People who get this kind of contract are usually in their twenties.
So getting this kind of contract at his age.
Is very rare.
His teammate Green said when he heard: "Unbelievable."
The fourth number: Curry's company.
His own company.
Reportedly brings in about one hundred seventy-something million dollars a year.
Meaning.
Curry is no longer just a sports star.
He himself is also a boss.
What he signed isn't a simple "endorsement."
It's moving his own brand.
Over to Li-Ning's side.
Now let's talk about Li-Ning's side.
Why is Li-Ning willing to pay so much money?
Li-Ning's thinking is clear.
They want to do two things.
First, sell Li-Ning in America.
Chinese brands wanting to go global has been a major trend in recent years.
But with Curry.
Li-Ning can enter the American market more easily.
They say they want to open many "Curry Brand" stores in America.
Stores selling sneakers.
Selling sportswear.
Selling everything basketball-related.
Second.
In the Chinese market.
Li-Ning wants to make itself more "international."
Chinese young people like international brands.
They like watching the NBA.
With Curry, Li-Ning.
Now has what amounts to an "international calling card."
When selling shoes.
There are more stories to tell.
But not everyone is happy about this.
On the American side, some politicians have spoken up.
They brought up one thing.
That is, back in 2022.
The US said Li-Ning's factories.
Were connected to forced labor in Xinjiang.
After that, some of Li-Ning's products.
Couldn't be sold in America.
Now that Curry has signed with Li-Ning.
Some American politicians are criticizing him.
Saying: "You shouldn't be partnering with a company like this."
But Curry, as of now, hasn't said anything.
Li-Ning hasn't said anything either.
So whether this part will cause trouble down the road.
We don't know yet.
When I heard this news.
I have several feelings myself.
The first feeling, is that the world is changing.
In the past.
American sports stars all signed with American companies.
Nike, Adidas, Under Armour — all American or European companies.
Chinese sports stars signed with Chinese companies.
Now it's different.
One of the most famous American sports stars.
Went and signed with a Chinese company.
And signed for ten years.
This thing.
Five years ago would have been almost impossible.
Now it's happened.
This shows: the money in the Chinese market.
Has become important enough.
That even a star like Curry.
Has to think about it.
The second feeling.
Is more specific.
It's that Li-Ning's "ambition" this time is enormous.
Li-Ning isn't trying to do a simple "endorsement."
It's trying to become a "global brand."
They're using ten years to bet on Curry.
Betting that Curry can help them break into the American market.
And betting that Curry can make the Chinese market like Li-Ning more.
This is a big bet.
If they win the bet, Li-Ning could become the next Nike.
If they lose, four hundred million dollars is just gone.
We'll have to wait a few years to know.
The third feeling.
Is the hardest to say.
It's the "US-China relationship" behind this story.
Look.
An American.
Earning ten years of stable income for his own family.
He chose a Chinese company.
That's just business.
He didn't think about politics.
But the moment it became public.
It turned into politics.
American politicians came out to criticize him.
Chinese people are also discussing: does he count as "one of us."
A thing that was originally business.
Became a thing both sides are talking about.
This is the 2026 world.
Finally, I want to ask you a question.
What about you.
In your country.
Are there famous people.
Who've done a "cross-border business" thing.
And then got talked about by others.
Saying "you shouldn't partner with that side."
How do you see this kind of thing?
Do you think, doing business should look at the money.
Or should it look at the political position?
This question has no easy answer.
Take your time thinking about it.
