About this story
An intermediate Chinese listening story: a brief IT failure grounded all American Airlines flights nationwide, cascading into hours of delays, and, coming days after the T-Mobile outage, a reminder of our dependence on invisible systems. HSK 5-6 Chinese listening practice.

On the evening of July 28th, for many Americans about to catch a flight, their plans were upended by one piece of news.
American Airlines, one of the biggest airlines in the U.S., announced that because of a technical failure, it was temporarily grounding all of its flights.
The company explained that that evening, part of its systems' connectivity had suddenly failed.
Out of caution, they asked U.S. aviation authorities for a nationwide ground stop, keeping every plane on the ground for the time being.
For that brief stretch, from the East Coast to the West, American's flights were almost entirely frozen.
In airports, the word "delayed" kept multiplying on flight boards, and gates filled with bewildered passengers.
Mercifully, the failure didn't last long; within an hour the systems gradually recovered, and planes lined up to take off again.
But aviation is a chain: when one link jams, the flights, crews, and passengers behind it all get dragged into cascading delays.
So even after the systems recovered, the delays and missed flights from that night took a long time to slowly clear.
What's more striking is that just days earlier, telecom giant T-Mobile had suffered a nationwide outage of its own.
Two big systems, telecom and aviation, stumbling within a single week is like a warning to everyone.
As more and more of daily life is handed to an invisible technical system, each tiny wobble of it can freeze countless people's lives right where they stand.
