一半信仰,一半泡沫:Aschenbrenner 的450亿 AI 基金如何在抛售中崩塌
Half Faith, Half Bubble: How Aschenbrenner's $45B AI Fund Collapsed in the Selloff
An intermediate Chinese listening story: ex-OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner's ~$45B AI fund, once up 4x, was gutted by July's AI selloff (Citadel buying its book) — a warning bell after Big Tech's record AI spend.
This is an HSK 5-6 Chinese listening episode that runs about 2 minutes. The full Mandarin script is shown with tap-for-pinyin and a line-by-line English translation, so you can listen and read at once — comprehensible input in the sense of Stephen Krashen's i+1 theory. It teaches 10 key vocabulary words such as 研究、规模、投资 and walks through 3 grammar patterns, each explained in English with examples. The same news story is retold at 4 difficulty levels — use the level selector above to find the version that is challenging but still understandable for you.

In this round of AI mania, few people look more like a legend than Leopold Aschenbrenner.
He is very young; he once did research at OpenAI, then wrote a long essay about the future of AI that made him a name in the field overnight.
Later, he simply started his own hedge fund, named "Situational Awareness," to bet heavily and specifically on AI.
A hedge fund, put simply, is this: he manages money for a group of wealthy clients and uses all sorts of methods to invest and place bets.
And his way of betting was to put nearly all his chips in one direction: AI.
At first, this approach was simply magic.
Over the past two years, AI-related stocks soared; the chip and hardware firms he was heavy in kept rising, while the software firms he shorted kept falling.
His fund's size peaked at about forty-five billion dollars, once up more than fourfold in total.
In those days, he was practically crowned the "genius trader who understood AI best."
But just this July, the wind reversed without warning.
AI stocks suddenly plunged together, and the heavier he had bet, the more brutal the losses.
To meet margin calls, he was forced to painfully dump his public holdings — reportedly Citadel even stepped in to take them.
In just a few weeks, a star fund once worth over forty billion shrank with a crash.
The most thought-provoking part is a line in his letter to investors: this crash is actually a rare chance to buy the dip.
He still firmly believes in AI, and even invited clients to add more money in August.
This grips so many people because it's like an alarm bell.
Just days ago, Google, Microsoft, and Meta were still throwing money at AI, pushing capital spending to astronomical numbers;
now, the most aggressive AI bettors have been the first to taste the bitterness.
Half faith, half bubble.
As the tide goes out for the first time, people are finally asking, in earnest: this huge gamble, in the end, who will foot the bill?
