English transcript reference

Speaking of the world's most influential music festival, Coachella is at the center of conversation every year.

The first weekend of this year just ended.

Let's talk about what happened.

First a brief introduction to Coachella.

It's held in Indio, California.

About a two-hour drive east of Los Angeles.

A city in the desert.

Daytime temperatures often exceed forty degrees.

But over 200,000 people still go every April.

Coachella runs for two consecutive weekends.

Same lineup but different audiences.

Tickets range from five to six hundred dollars to several thousand.

Plus accommodation, transportation, food.

Going once might cost three to four thousand dollars.

But everyone still scrambles to go.

Because Coachella isn't just music.

It's fashion, it's socializing, it's content.

Every year during Coachella.

Content on TikTok and Instagram multiplies several times over.

Outfit videos, performance clips, backstage footage.

For many people, going to Coachella isn't about listening to music.

It's about being photographed.

Alright, let's get to the point.

Who are this year's three headliners.

Friday was Sabrina Carpenter.

Saturday was Justin Bieber.

Sunday was Karol G.

First, Sabrina Carpenter.

She's probably the hottest female pop singer in the world this year.

Her Coachella debut didn't disappoint.

She turned the stage into a five-act mini theater.

Each act had completely different sets and costumes.

One look per song.

She changed outfits faster than you change your phone wallpaper.

And she invited two big names to make guest appearances.

Will Ferrell appeared on stage as a handyman character.

Creating the biggest laugh of the whole show.

Susan Sarandon also came.

Plus a short film narrated by Sam Elliott was played on stage.

The whole performance wasn't like a concert.

It was more like a Broadway musical.

With a storyline, characters, conflict, and a climax.

This kind of "immersive" performance style is becoming more popular.

Sabrina clearly raised the bar another notch.

Then Justin Bieber.

Bieber reportedly got a ten million dollar fee.

The highest in Coachella history.

He's in his thirties now.

But his biggest songs are still the ones from when he was twelve.

Baby.

Never Say Never.

That Should Be Me.

He did something at Coachella that surprised many people.

He put a laptop on stage.

Opened YouTube.

Played videos of himself singing on YouTube over a decade ago.

The very videos that got him discovered.

Twelve-year-old Bieber singing in his bedroom.

Then thirty-something Bieber standing on Coachella's big stage.

Singing along with those videos.

Tens of thousands singing Baby together.

This scene made many people cry.

But the reviews weren't entirely positive.

Some said his performance was "messy."

"Not very focused."

"Felt like he was hanging out in his own living room."

But others thought that's precisely Bieber's style.

Not perfect.

But real.

Finally Karol G.

This was the most historically significant performance at this year's Coachella.

Karol G is from Colombia.

Singing reggaeton and Latin pop.

She is the first Latina to close out Coachella in its history.

The first one.

This is a huge moment in the Latin music community.

What was the most viral scene from her performance?

She invited an all-female Mariachi band from Los Angeles on stage.

Mariachi is a traditional Mexican music performance form.

Wearing gorgeous traditional costumes.

Playing violins, playing trumpets.

These female Mariachi standing on Coachella's main stage.

Performing together with a Colombian pop singer.

This scene went viral online.

Because it represented Latin culture breaking through at a mainstream music festival.

Besides the three headliners.

There were several interesting performances worth mentioning.

BINI is an eight-member girl group from the Philippines.

They are the first Filipino artist in Coachella history.

In the context of Asian music entering Western mainstream.

BINI's appearance is significant.

Their forty-five-minute set was performed in English and Filipino.

The audience was packed.

Jack White brought pure rock to the Mojave tent.

He was a last-minute addition.

But his performance was rated by many as one of the best of the whole festival.

The closing song Seven Nation Army made the whole tent erupt.

Nine Inch Nails and electronic musician Boys Noize collaborated on a crossover show called "Nine Inch Noize."

Dancers in grey bodysuits writhed on stage like zombies.

Industrial rock meets electronic dance music.

Very experimental in spirit.

There were also some surprise moments.

Young Thug brought out Camila Cabello to sing Havana together.

FKA Twigs' performance was called "the most artistic of the entire festival."

She paid tribute to West Coast Ballroom culture.

Laufey played piano and sang quietly in a tent.

So quiet it felt like another world.

This is the charm of Coachella.

You can in the same day.

First listen to industrial rock.

Then watch K-pop dance.

Then listen to an Icelandic girl play piano in the desert.

And finally sing Baby with tens of thousands of people.

No other event can give you this kind of experience.

Coachella's second weekend starts next week.

Same desert.

Same lineup.

But different audiences.

And different surprises.

If you want to know what the music world is paying attention to right now.

Just look at Coachella.

It's a mirror of global pop culture.
