Start with a person.
Meg White was once the drummer in a band, and that band was extremely famous.
After the band broke up she stopped appearing: no interviews, no photographs, no stage.
Seventeen years, and in public she was simply not there.
When a person disappears like that they usually have their own reasons, and other people do not need to know them.
On the sixth of August this year, the Daily Mail in Britain published a report.
The headline said, in effect: we have found her.
The report said this reclusive woman musician was now living another kind of life.
Below it were more than ten photographs, taken by following her, without her knowledge.
The paper wrote: this is the first time she has been photographed in seventeen years.
The reporter who wrote it is called Joe Hutchison.
Up to this point, it is simply a very ordinary piece of entertainment journalism.
What turned it into something else is one action in the middle of it.
After taking the photographs, the reporter walked up and asked her a question.
He asked: are you Meg White?
The woman laughed, and told him: you have got the wrong person.
She said it to his face, and she said it clearly.
And then the report ran anyway.
More than ten covertly taken photographs were printed anyway.
A few days later, Karen Elson saw the photos.
She is Jack White’s ex-wife, she knows the people in that circle, and she recognised her at a glance.
She identified the woman in the photos and said it was not Meg White — it was a friend of Meg White’s.
An ordinary person.
The Daily Mail then took the article and the photos down from its website.
It issued no correction, and no apology.
Take this apart now, and two people were harmed by it.
The first is Meg White.
Seventeen years of not appearing is, in itself, a perfectly clear statement.
And the entire premise of that report is that her hiding is a thing we are entitled to crack.
The second is the woman in the photographs.
She has nothing whatsoever to do with any of this; she simply knows Meg White.
She was followed for days, covertly photographed more than ten times, and then those photographs were sent to the whole world.
And she denied it to his face, and that denial had no effect at all.
This layer is the one that sits worst.
Getting a report wrong is a correctable problem, and its damage is limited.
But asking to her face, being denied to his face, and publishing regardless — that is not getting it wrong.
That is never having intended to be stopped by the answer.
So the real problem here is not that they identified the wrong person.
It is that by the time the question was asked, the answer no longer mattered.
Think about it:
If someone mistook you for another person and sent your photo to the whole world, what could you do?
