Put the two things in order, side by side; all the force of this story is in the order.

First: Denmark’s prime minister Mette Frederiksen had just returned from Ukraine, where she had been through air raid sirens.

When the siren sounds, you put down whatever is in your hands and go underground.

Second: she got home, opened her phone, and found a direct message.

It was from a plastic surgeon, and the gist was: I can help you get rid of that little spot on your nose.

On one side, air raid sirens; on the other, "there is something wrong with your nose".

She wrote a reply on Instagram, saying she has lost count of the comments about her appearance over the years.

Some said her teeth were ugly, some said her hair was thin, some suggested she get Botox.

"Lost count" is the heaviest phrase in that paragraph.

The problem is not that any one of them is especially bad. It is that they have never stopped.

There is no defence in her reply, only one fact: I am nearly fifty, my body is exactly as it is, and I am happy with it.

The sentence has force precisely because it does not defend: she did not explain what the spot is, or say why she has not dealt with it.

She simply took back the initiative: my body — I define it.

The moment a person starts explaining, they have conceded that the other side was entitled to ask.

She did not concede that.

And there is one last step, the finest part of the whole thing: she screenshotted the surgeon’s message and published it, but did not name him.

She turned it into an example everyone could see, without turning the man into something everyone could pile onto.

She said what she had to say, and still did not do to him what he had done to her.

That step is harder than it looks, because the least effortful and most satisfying option is always to put the name up.

She gave that option up.

So what is really worth remembering here may not be who she hit back at.

It is that in a situation that could easily have escalated, she chose to stop at exactly enough.

Think about it:

If someone passes judgement on your appearance, would you answer back?

And how far would you go?
