Today let's talk about a clean, clinical World Cup knockout game: France comfortably beat Sweden three to zero.

Unlike the roller-coaster games before it, this one had little suspense — France firmly controlled the situation from start to finish, and the brightest name of the night was, again, Mbappé.

First, a word on this France team.

France is a super-power of world soccer, in both star power and depth among the very top tier.

What's most fearsome about them isn't how strong any one star is, but that the whole team, back to front, has a world-class player at every position.

Think about it: even in the group stage, another of their stars, Dembélé, could score a hat-trick, three by himself; and today, it's Mbappé's turn to take over the game.

This "if not this one, then that one" reserve of firepower is a nightmare that gives any opponent a headache.

And Mbappé is undoubtedly this lavish side's number-one ace — astonishing pace, outstanding technique, one of the most lethal forwards in soccer today.

Let's look at the game.

This is the knockouts, lose and you're out, and Sweden, well aware of the quality gap, took a low posture from kickoff, trying to steady their defense first.

France, unhurried, patiently held and circulated the ball, wearing the opponent down bit by bit, waiting for a gap to appear.

As the first half neared its close, Mbappé finally pierced that paper screen, one to zero, helping France take the lead before the break.

This perfectly timed goal fully opened the game up.

After the change of ends, the advantaged France played ever more calmly.

In the fifty-third minute, young Barcola added another, two to zero, further stretching the lead.

By the seventy-fourth minute, Mbappé scored again, a brace, locking the score at three to zero, the win settled outright.

After that, France steadily controlled the tempo, giving Sweden no more chances, cleanly keeping a clean sheet and advancing with heads high.

Interestingly, placing today's game alongside the earlier exits of Germany and the Netherlands is especially telling.

All traditional powers, yet Germany and the Netherlands both came unstuck in the knockouts, while France won so easily and so calmly.

Where's the difference? To a great extent, it lies in France's "steadiness."

They have both top talent and the ability and mindset to cash that talent in — not getting carried away when ahead, not panicking when behind, always playing to their own tempo.

In this knockout stage full of upsets, with giants falling one after another, to take a game as unruffled as France did is itself a very strong proof of quality.

After all, talent decides your ceiling, but stability decides whether you can truly go all the way.

How to judge this game?

For France, this is a convincing and quite menacing complete win.

They not only won, but won without conceding, efficient at both ends.

With a top scorer like Mbappé to settle things decisively, and a driven young force like Barcola, France's attack comes in endless waves, impossible to defend.

As one of the most fancied teams of this World Cup, with a game like this they sent every potential opponent a clear, cold signal: France is coming on strong, aiming for the title.

And for Sweden, losing to a France like this is no disgrace at all.

What they faced is one of the strongest teams on the planet, the chasm in quality objectively there and unavoidable.

Their World Cup journey ends here, but to fight their way to the knockout stage is itself an achievement worth affirming.

That's France three to zero Sweden — a knockout game belonging to the strong, and to Mbappé.
