Today we'll talk about someone many Chinese people are discussing lately — her name is Han Hong.
Let me introduce her briefly.
Han Hong is a very famous singer who has sung many songs everyone knows.
But what truly earns her respect is not just her songs.
For many years, she has done charity — using her own money and energy to help people in need.
What's most admirable is that she doesn't just donate money.
She often brings people and medicine herself to remote places, helping village after village.
She also founded a foundation, and many ordinary people are willing to donate a little each month, entrusting it to her to help others.
You could say the public's trust in her was built up bit by bit, over many years.
But recently, that trust ran into trouble.
Here's what happened.
A few days ago, Han Hong attended an event for a movie.
She had written the music for the film.
On stage, she said one sentence to the audience.
She said: Beijing has over twenty million people — could you give us 'face' and help boost the box office?
It was this phrase, 'give us face', that suddenly caused big trouble.
Many who heard it felt uncomfortable.
People thought: you're so rich, living in a big house — how can you turn it around and ask us ordinary folk to give you 'face' and help a star sell movie tickets?
The matter spread fast online, the criticism growing fiercer and fiercer.
More seriously, some who used to donate to her foundation each month, out of anger, stopped their donations.
Facing such a big storm, Han Hong finally stepped forward and apologized.
She said her words had been too casual, too careless.
It's said that when she wrote the apology, she was crying too hard to speak.
She also promised to speak more carefully and work steadily from now on.
Her foundation also spoke up, publishing last year's accounts to show where the money went, and said Han Hong would not withdraw from charity.
At this point, I'd like to say a few words to you.
Can one sentence really carry so much power?
It seems to have suddenly overshadowed all the good Han Hong did over many years.
But think carefully: why is everyone so angry?
Actually, it's precisely because people cared about her, and trusted her, so much.
The deeper the love, the heavier the disappointment may be.
Finally, I want to ask you two questions.
First, if someone has done much good in the past, should we forgive them for one wrong sentence now and then?
Second, when we're attacking someone online, shouldn't we pause and think first?
These two questions have no standard answer, but they're worth thinking about slowly.
