Today we are going to talk about a person.
This person is called Jake.
Jake is American.
Jake loved climbing mountains.
What is mountain climbing?
Look: here is a mountain.
This mountain is high — very, very high.
You are at the bottom of the mountain, and you want to get to the top.
Your hands are on the rock.
Bit by bit, you go up, and up.
That is called climbing.
In America there is a very big mountain.
This mountain is all rock.
This mountain is very, very, very high.
A lot of people want to climb this mountain.
This mountain is so high that climbing it takes a long time.
Some people climb for a day.
Some climb for two days, or three.
While you are climbing, it is exhausting, and it is slow.
Jake was not that kind of person.
Jake climbed fast — very, very fast.
Two years ago, Jake and a friend climbed this mountain together.
How long did they take?
Not three days.
Not one day.
Not ten hours either.
Two hours, fifty-five minutes.
In two hours and fifty-five minutes, they were at the top.
Before Jake, there were people who climbed fast too.
Those people took ten minutes longer than Jake.
So now Jake was the fastest.
In May, Jake went to climb this mountain again.
In one day, he went up twice.
Twice in one day!
Up, down, and up again.
A lot of climbers knew Jake.
They said: Jake climbs fast, and he climbs well.
In August, Jake went to a mountain.
There, Jake fell.
He did not come home.
Jake was thirty years old — very young.
His friends are all very sad.
They said: when we climb, we will think of him.
