Start with something you are holding right now.

Play a game on your phone for long enough and the back of it gets warm.

Current flows into a chip; part of it becomes the computed result, and all of the rest becomes heat.

There is no dodging this: if it is computing, it is producing heat.

Now scale that up proportionally.

Artificial intelligence does not run on one chip. It runs on a whole building of chips, twenty-four hours a day, without stopping.

A building like that has a formal name: a data centre.

Its hardest problem is not, in fact, insufficient power.

It is that the heat cannot get out.

As the temperature rises a chip throttles itself; rise further and it simply burns.

So what a data centre truly does every day comes down to one thing: moving heat.

The cheapest and most widespread way to move heat is with water.

The process runs roughly like this: water is sent past the hot parts, comes back heated, and goes out to a cooling tower outside the building.

In the tower, some of that water evaporates.

Evaporating water carries off a great deal of heat; the water that has not evaporated drops in temperature and flows back inside.

The whole logic turns on those two words: "evaporates away".

That portion of the water did not get dirty, and did not go down a drain; it turned straight into vapour, dispersed into the air, and was gone.

Which is why, in this industry, nobody says "uses water" about a data centre. They say "consumes water".

Water that is used returns to the system. Water that is consumed does not.

How much water does a large data centre consume in a year?

In publicly disclosed figures, hundreds of millions of gallons is a fairly common order of magnitude.

More troubling than the total are the following two things.

First, to keep the pipework from scaling and growing bacteria, many cooling towers use treated clean water — which is to say, standard drinking water.

Second, these buildings tend to be sited where electricity and land are cheap, and such places tend also to be dry.

Put those two together and you get the argument that has replayed in so many small American towns these past few years:

A building moves in, brings a few dozen jobs and a line of tax revenue, and starts drinking the town’s water.

The people of the town have to vote between those two things.

The principle is not complicated; most people have heard it once, and then forgotten it.

This August, one man made it unforgettable.

His name is Jason Kelce, a retired football player, famous in America at the household-name level.

He and two companies made an advert: one is his own beer brand, the other makes canned water.

In it, he holds up a glass jar and, with an utterly straight face, sings:

Give us your pee.

Let us all pee on the computers.

They then genuinely listed the jar for sale at eighteen dollars.

Taken apart, it is a glass jar with a lid, with a line printed on the side: data centre coolant collector.

A disclaimer runs at the end of the advert: none of the above is to be taken literally.

The joke works because of a fact from a secondary-school biology lesson: urine is ninety-five percent water.

So the entire advert accomplishes exactly one thing.

It turns the abstract sentence "data centres drink water" into an image you cannot look away from.

This is worth spelling out, because it is a rare success in communication.

The same problem, argued in gallon figures for ten years, left the public retaining close to nothing.

One man holding a jar and singing went nationwide in a day.

The difference is not in the quantity of information, but in whether there is an action a body can perform.

There is another side to this, though, and it belongs in the same breath.

The advert was made by a beer brand and a water brand.

The problem they point at is real, and they are also running a business.

An advert against wasting water ends up selling an empty glass jar for eighteen dollars.

Those two facts do not contradict each other — it is only worth knowing what you are watching while you are being made to laugh.

Finally, back to that warm chip at the start.

The little bit of heat in your phone you can feel with your hand.

The heat of a whole building you cannot feel; it has been moved into water, and the water into vapour, and dispersed into the air.

It never disappeared. It just moved somewhere you cannot see.

Think about it:

If a data centre were built beside your house tomorrow, bringing jobs and tax revenue and drinking your town’s water, which side would you vote for?
