Laid Off and Still Job Hunting, He Has Helped Pull Nearly 60,000 Fake Jobs Off LinkedIn

About this story

Jay Jones, a Chicago-area copywriter laid off in late 2023, calls himself The Profiler. While still looking for work, he has tracked nearly 60,000 fake job listings and flagged about 7,000 scam profiles — like five "Linda Anthony" recruiters sharing one photo, which vanished once he posted about them. He explains how scammers sell résumé help, harvest driver's licenses and Social Security numbers, and hijack forgotten verified LinkedIn accounts, and why LinkedIn's 14-day appeal window made him furious. Are you looking for a job?

When a lot of people look for work, they look online.

There are lots and lots of jobs online.

Some jobs are real, and some jobs are fake.

What fake jobs want is your money.

Today we're talking about an American.

His name is Jay, and he's thirty-nine.

Every day, he looks for fake jobs online.

Before, he worked at a company, and his job was writing.

Then the company let him go.

He didn't have a job anymore.

He started looking for work online too.

Back then, someone said to him: your writing isn't good.

Give me money, and I can get you a job.

Jay thought: this person is fake.

Then Jay started searching online too — searching for fake jobs.

He spends a lot of his time sitting in front of the computer.

How many fake jobs has he found?

Almost sixty thousand.

He's also found lots of fake people — more than seven thousand.

One day in the middle of the night, he saw someone online.

Her name was Linda, and she said: I can give you a job.

Then Jay saw two Lindas, three Lindas, five Lindas.

All five Lindas had a photo of the same person.

All five Lindas were new.

So Linda wasn't a real person.

Jay talked about these five Lindas online.

Very soon, all five Lindas were gone.

Jay said: turn on the light, and the bugs all run away.

What do these fake people want?

Some want your money.

Some want your name and your ID, and then they sell them to other people.

Jay says: when you see someone new, think twice.

Jay still doesn't have a job.

He also drives people around, so he can make a little money.

Some people are very grateful to him and give him a little money.

Jay has two children.

He says: when the kids grow up, they'll know what their dad did.

When you look for jobs online, have you seen fake ones?
