First, how small this is: a bus driver blows bubbles as passengers board.
That is the whole of it, and it ended up in an American newspaper.
In London, riding the bus is probably the most expressionless stretch of the day.
Get on, find a seat, head down over the phone, get off at your stop; the whole way, very few people look up.
But on one route in the north-east, there is a driver who does not do that.
Every time the doors open, he blows a stream of bubbles from the cab that drift in front of the people boarding.
Grown-ups smile. Children shout out loud.
Over time, all the local kids knew this bus and gave it a name: the bubble bus.
Some would rather wait at the stop, letting another bus go by, just to ride this one.
Later, Hackney Council went and interviewed him and put the video online.
Later still, even an American newspaper wrote about this London driver.
A gesture that takes two minutes a day, carried to another continent.
Right — now what happened this year.
The bus operator, Go Ahead London, came to him and told him to stop.
The reason given was "safety considerations".
Considerations about what, specifically?
Worry that the bubbles block the driver’s view? Worry that children get distracted at the door?
The company did not explain, and to this day has offered no specific account.
It responded with a single line: what we do is get Londoners to their destinations on time.
So the driver stopped.
The bus still runs, the route is unchanged, the passengers are the same passengers.
It is only that when the children board, there are no longer any bubbles.
This spread, I suspect, not because of the bubbles themselves.
It spread because a lot of people recognised a familiar shape: a reason that never has to be explained can push down a thing that definitely made people happy.
In an organisation large enough, allowing something requires a signature; stopping it requires only silence.
Think about it: if there really is a risk, why is nobody willing to spell the risk out?
