Between Nepal and Tibet there are very high mountains.
The mountains are high, and up there it is cold.
On the mountain there is ice.
One day in August, a little after eight in the morning.
A block of ice on the mountain came down.
That block of ice was very, very big.
The ice came down, and rocks came down with it.
Below the mountain there is water — a river.
The ice and the rocks all went into the river.
The water in the river could not get through.
The water stopped there.
The water got more and more, more and more.
Then, the water came down.
The water was big and it was fast.
Below the mountain there were people.
Many people come here to see the mountains, and to walk on them.
They did not know the ice had come down.
The water came.
Four hundred people died.
More than a thousand people cannot be found.
The ice on the mountain came down.
The people below did not know.
