In France, many students aren't going to school right now.
They really want to learn.
But they stand in front of their schools and say: we want teachers!
法国 is France.
Paris is in France.
In September, at a school next to Paris, the students were very unhappy.
What did they say?
Listen.
One student said: our school has too few teachers.
Sometimes we go to school, but the teacher doesn't come to teach.
A class is when the teacher talks at the front and the students listen.
Without a teacher, the students can't have class.
Another student said: our class has thirty-five people.
Your class is you and your classmates.
Your classmates are all in your class.
Thirty-five people is too many.
Too many people, too few chairs; some students have no chair to sit on.
The school is very, very hot inside.
The students said: few teachers, few chairs, the school is too hot—we're unhappy.
So they stopped going to class.
They stand in front of the school and say: we want teachers, we want chairs.
This is called a protest.
A protest is when many people in one place say: this isn't right, we don't want this.
Students at one school protested.
Then students at many schools protested too.
On September 30th, 250,000 people in France were protesting.
250,000 is a lot of people.
Some protests were very bad.
Some people hit things at schools, and hit the police.
警察 is police.
The police came and took many students away.
One day, the police took away two thousand people.
Many of the students were fifteen or sixteen.
In the north of France, a fifteen-year-old student lost a hand during the protests.
A student, fifteen years old, lost a hand.
Now, more than five hundred schools in France have closed.
Students can't go to class.
France says: we'll give schools money, and there will be new teachers.
But the students say: we want to see the teachers, we want to see the chairs.
