Today let's talk about a big upset fit for this World Cup's history books: Paraguay knocked out Germany in a penalty shootout.

Note — it's Paraguay who sent Germany home, not the other way around.

When this result came out, even many Paraguay fans themselves probably couldn't believe it.

First, the weight of the two sides.

Germany is a super-giant of world soccer, a multiple World Cup winner, their players almost all in Europe's top leagues.

Paraguay comes from South America, not weak, but in paper squad and fame, they're genuinely not in the same class as Germany.

So pre-match opinion was nearly one-sided, everyone assuming Germany would pass through smoothly.

That said, Germany had actually stumbled all through this World Cup.

Back in the group stage, they'd suffered an upset loss to Ecuador, their form never quite stable.

Though they still advanced as group winners on the strength of their foundation, the hidden troubles were long laid, and today merely brought them to a head.

Let's look at the game.

To everyone's surprise, the one to break through first was, of all teams, Paraguay.

In the first half, Enciso seized a chance to score, one to zero.

Behind, Germany clearly grew anxious — after all, this is the knockouts, and losing means packing up and going home.

Thankfully in the second half, Havertz stepped up to level it, one to one, pulling Germany back from the cliff's edge.

After that, both teams wanted to settle it in regulation, but attack as they might, neither could score again.

Ninety minutes drawn, the game went to extra time.

Across the thirty minutes of extra time, the two still couldn't be separated, the score nailed firmly at one to one.

In the end, this evenly matched duel could only be settled by the cruelest means — a penalty shootout.

A shootout, in a sense, tests not technique but the mind.

A player stands utterly alone at the twelve-yard spot, facing the gaze of tens of thousands and the pressure of the keeper — that stress is beyond ordinary imagining.

One missed kick can mean a nation's World Cup journey ends right there.

And in this contest of pure will, Paraguay laughed last — they converted more penalties, four to three, and pulled off the upset, knocking Germany out.

At the final moment, the whole Paraguay team celebrated wildly, while Germany's players stood there dazed and dispirited, faces full of disbelief.

Actually, favorites crashing out in the knockouts is nothing new.

The group stage lets you grind slowly on quality; play one game poorly and there's still the next. But the knockouts are different — they compress everything into a short hour or two.

One moment's slackness, one ball mishandled, and the story may be over.

Facing a weaker team that has thrown caution to the wind and carries no baggage, a strong team instead easily shoulders the heavy mental burden of "must win," playing tied up in knots.

Paraguay seized exactly this — with nothing to lose, they played more relaxed and fiercer; while the more Germany wanted to close it out steadily, the more they fell into fretting over gains and losses.

This shift in mentality is often the very breeding ground of an upset.

How to judge this game?

For Germany, this is undoubtedly a painful and embarrassing defeat; going out early is enough to plunge the whole nation into reflection.

But soccer's cruelty lies precisely here: superior quality never equals a sure win, especially before a shootout, that "half luck, half nerve" duel, where no one can be fully certain.

And for Paraguay, this is a milestone worth remembering for many years.

They feared no strong foe, fought to the death, and withstood the sky-high pressure of a shootout — that courage and resilience deserves everyone's heartfelt respect.

That's Paraguay knocking Germany out on penalties — a World Cup upset belonging to the brave.
