Start with a name: Keighley, the name of a camera.
A machine — why give it a person’s surname?
Because Keighley is the surname of a married couple.
The husband spent fifty-three years at this film company.
What he did was not shooting; it was quality control — when a film was finished, he checked whether the colours were right and whether the picture was clear.
Fifty-three years, roughly five hundred films.
His wife is still at the company today, doing the same job.
So when the new machine was built, the company engraved their surname on it.
Now, why a new one had to be built.
This company’s films use exceptionally large film stock; the bigger the frame, the clearer it is on screen.
But cameras for large film have an old complaint: they are too loud.
The cinematographer described the previous one as a broken lawnmower.
Once the machine runs, there is no recording live sound; what you hear is the machine, not the lines.
So for twenty years the practice was: shoot the big scenes on it, and switch to another camera the moment anyone speaks.
One film, two kinds of camera, swapped back and forth.
Until Nolan said: I want a film shot on it from beginning to end, speech included.
The company had no choice but to build a new one.
And the new one has gone quiet: it used to sound like a broken lawnmower, now it sounds like a well-oiled sewing machine.
The film is called The Odyssey — a man who gets all the way home on talk and wits.
A story about speaking, shot on a machine that can finally record speaking.
And it all comes back to that surname: the husband never shot a single film in his life.
What he did was look at pictures for fifty-three years and judge whether they were right.
Think about it:
One thing — could you do it for fifty-three years?
