Today I want to talk about Marvel, because over the past few days it dropped two bombshells at once and set the whole world's movie fans on fire.
Here's the deal: this year, Marvel has two very tightly connected big movies coming.
One is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, out July 31st.
The other is Avengers: Doomsday, out December 18th.
Let's start with Spider-Man.
Its setup is interesting: the story takes place several years after the last film, No Way Home.
This Peter Parker is alone in New York, with not a single person who remembers who he is — he's become a completely lonely, full-time Spider-Man.
The moment the trailer dropped, many longtime fans were wrecked by that familiar feeling, saying this one is even more exciting than the neighboring Avengers trailer.
But what really blew up the internet was Avengers: Doomsday.
Just a few days ago, it released its first trailer.
The biggest bombshell: Robert Downey Jr. — the Iron Man we all know best — is back.
You might say: didn't Iron Man sacrifice himself to save everyone? How can he be back?
Here's the key: this time he's back not as a hero, but as Marvel's biggest villain — Doctor Doom.
The same face — once the starting point of the whole Marvel universe and everyone's number-one hero — is now going to become the great villain who ends everything.
That stark contrast leaves countless longtime viewers with all kinds of feelings — excited, and a little unable to accept it.
But sharp-eyed people quickly spotted a question: this Avengers trailer has Iron Man, even Doctor Strange — so why, of all people, is Spider-Man missing?
It's actually not that Marvel forgot him — it's on purpose.
According to the official timeline, Spider-Man: Brand New Day takes place right before Avengers: Doomsday.
In other words, Spider-Man was still busy with his own story at the time, so he couldn't show up with everyone.
Even cleverer: the Hulk will appear first in the Spider-Man movie, then enter the Avengers — using one character to quietly stitch the two films together.
So you see, Marvel is playing this smart: use Spider-Man to set your emotions up first, then at year's end hit you with a “villain-version Iron Man” for the finishing blow.
For longtime fans, this year is destined to be both a thrill and a heartbreak.
And you?
Downey playing a big villain — are you excited, or a little reluctant to let go?
