On the evening of April 30th, a mechanical watch keeps time perfectly, and the date is correct.

But just after midnight, it might display a non-existent 'April 31st'.

The contradiction is clear: the watch can calculate seconds precisely, but it may not understand the irregular months in the human calendar.

Rolex’s new Perpetual Padellone, launched this year, places this contradiction at the core of the product.

It features a complete annual calendar that automatically distinguishes between thirty-day and thirty-one-day months.

At the end of April, the date jumps directly from the 30th to May 1st; at the end of May, it waits until after the 31st before entering June.

The wearer does not need to manually correct the date at the end of every short month.

Rolex calls the mechanism that achieves this the Haplos system.

Official introductions show that the month disc transmits current month information to the annual calendar lever, which then determines when to change the month via the date mechanism.

The mechanical device counts forward and retains information about 'how long this month is'.

The more visible innovation occurs at midnight.

The day of the week, date, and month all jump to their new positions simultaneously in an instant, rather than moving slowly one after another.

The day of the week and the month are located in two windows at the twelve o'clock position, with text in English.

The date is arranged on the outer ring of the dial, indicated by a blue hand with a crescent moon tip.

The moon phase disc at the six o'clock position displays another cycle: the moon moves from a thin crescent to full, then slowly back to a thin crescent.

On one side are human-defined months, and on the other is the cycle of celestial motion; two sets of time are placed on the same dial.

However, this watch still retains one exception that requires human handling.

February has twenty-eight days in common years and twenty-nine in leap years; the Padellone does not automatically judge which day to enter March.

Therefore, it requires one manual adjustment per year.

This is also the difference between an 'annual calendar' and a 'perpetual calendar': the annual calendar handles thirty and thirty-one days, while the perpetual calendar continues to calculate February and leap years.

The 'Perpetual' in the product name is part of the Rolex series name and should not be misinterpreted as 'never needing to adjust the calendar'.

I actually feel that this February exception makes the boundaries of the design easier to understand.

For twelve months, the mechanical mechanism handles most month-ends; for the shortest month, the wearer completes the final step.

The name Padellone itself also connects to Rolex's history.

Collectors used it to refer to the 1949 Reference 8171 full-calendar wristwatch, and the new product revives this nickname.

Both the old and new watches emphasize a complete calendar, but the new watch adds an instant-jump annual calendar and the new Caliber 7190 movement.

Rolex states that this movement operates at five hertz, involving thirty patent applications, two of which are exclusive to this watch.

The new watch also features a moon phase display, approximately sixty-six hours of power reserve, and versions in rose gold and platinum.

These specifications indicate it is a complex mechanical piece, but the most intuitive experience in daily use remains very simple: raise your wrist in the morning, and the date should be correct.

A mobile phone can certainly accomplish the same task more easily and can automatically handle leap years.

The appeal of mechanical watches lies not in efficiency, but in how they turn abstract rules into the movements of real parts.

April tells the mechanism 'I only have thirty days,' May tells it 'I have a thirty-first day,' and February reminds the wearer to participate personally.

So-called automation does not mean there are no boundaries; good design makes the boundaries clear.

At the end of February next year, if you are wearing this watch, will you wait for it to change at midnight, or will you remember to adjust it the next morning?
