不是...而是...
Reach for this when you want to correct a misunderstanding — 'it's not X, it's actually Y.' You're swatting away a wrong assumption (X) and pinning down the real answer (Y) in the same breath. This is the go-to pattern for clarifying news, defending an opinion, or fixing a misread. Common in journalism, debates, and any sentence where you can feel the listener about to get the wrong idea.
Structure
不是 [WRONG IDEA] 而是 [CORRECT IDEA]
búshì... érshì...
How to Think About It
This is a correction, not a contrast. The job of 不是...而是... is to KILL the first idea so the second one can stand alone. Both halves must be the same type of thing — two nouns, two verb phrases, two reasons — because the second is replacing the first in the same slot. If the two halves don't slot in interchangeably, you want 虽然...但是... or 不仅...而且... instead.
Examples
他不是医生, 而是老师。
Tā búshì yīshēng, érshì lǎoshī.
He's not a doctor, he's a teacher.
问题不是钱, 而是时间。
Wèntí búshì qián, érshì shíjiān.
The problem isn't money, it's time.
我不是不想去, 而是没时间。
Wǒ búshì bù xiǎng qù, érshì méi shíjiān.
It's not that I don't want to go; I just don't have time.
Common Mistake
Learners reach for 但是 when they want to correct something, because English 'but' covers both contrast AND correction. In Chinese these are different patterns. If you're correcting a misconception, you need 而是 — 但是 just sets up contrast without killing the first claim.
他不是中国人, 但是日本人。
他不是中国人, 而是日本人。
Don't Confuse With
不是...就是...
Looks almost identical but means the opposite: 'either X or Y' (one of them is true). 不是中文就是英文 = 'it's either Chinese or English.' 而是 corrects; 就是 lists possibilities.
不仅...而且...
Use when the first clause IS true and you're adding more, not replacing it. '不仅便宜,而且好吃' = 'not only cheap, but also tasty.' Cheap is still true. With 不是...而是... the first part is false.
并非...而是...
Same meaning, written/formal register. 并非 is what you'll see in essays, op-eds, and news headlines. 不是 is the spoken default.
